Basecamp incredibly slow when connected to Forerunner 965

Recently purchased the Forerunner 965, and have it connected to my Windows 11 PC - a fairly powerful gaming PC.

The watch connects and synchronizes, and does its caching of all installed maps to my HDD, which is an m.2 drive.

Even though this data is on my local HDD, when I connect the watch it is recognised almost instantly, but navigating around a map, even with low detail turned on is unusable. I zoomed in to Sydney, Australia - and it took over 90 seconds for a map image to appear, and if I scroll around, this starts all over again.

What can I do to speed this up? - I have tried on multiple computers, ranging from average laptop, to decent desktop, to high end gaming PC, all with no improvement to the performance.

I assumed this should have been far quicker to load time....

  • The maps aren't cached to your hard drive, they are simply indexed by BaseCamp so BaseCamp can display them but they are being read from your watch which is why they are so slow. You don't say which maps you have installed. You may be able to use Express to install some to your PC. Others you may be able to copy to a removeable drive, either physical or virtual, which should improve the speed of BaseCamp. More info on virtual drives here www.javawa.nl/virtualdevice.html

  • Hi, Thanks for the quick reply.

I didn't realise that they weren't actually stored locally.

I have just copied the entire contents of the watch to a USB 3.0 thumb drive, and I plug that in with Basecamp and already a massive improvement. I will look at doing the virtual drive solution in the coming days.

    In answer to your question, my maps are;

    Course View: America.

Course View: Europe, Middle East, Africa.

    Course View: Pacific.

    Garmin DEM Australia / NZ

    Garmin DEM Europe.

    SkiView 2023

    TopoActive Africa North & South

    TopoActive Australia / NZ

TopoActive Europe Central / East / West.

Given that my watch is connected to my home WiFi also, can I transfer routes / waypoints to it over Wifi, or does it need the physical connection?

-- Thanks again for your help.

  • I don't believe so but I don't have your watch so can't be sure

  • can I transfer routes / waypoints to it over Wifi,

I'm using either Garmin Connect or Garmin Express to do that.
