Screen turns off after a fraction of a second after gesture

I went on a run this morning and used navigation, so I had to look at the map quite often. After I made the necessary gesture 3 things could happen:

Either the screen became visible and turned off again after the configured time-out (this is the preferred option)

Or the screen turned of and in a fraction of a second it turned off again. 

And somethings just nothing happens. The screen stays black.

    It's annoying to me as well. Is it possible to have an option where the screen is always full on during activities? I turned always on display to on and gesture to off thinking this would do it, but instead the screen is always dimmed.
