Track -- can I adjust lanes mid-workout?

Let's say I do my warmup & cooldown laps in lane 7 (main laps still in lane 1) and I reaaally like accuracy. Can I switch lanes in settings mid-workout without it recalculating the entire workout?

If I really had a wish list, I'd have it so I wouldn't have to declare a lane (just go off of old GPS) until I'm ready for my "on" sets around the track (at which time I would toggle it to stick to lane 1).

Any wisdom on this is appreciated! Thx in advance --
Matt

  • If it works like my older Forerunner, you can hold the left middle button during a work-out, go to "Track Run Settings" (first item for me), then "Lane Numnber" (second item for me).

Since you also requested some wisdom ;):

The good thing about a track is that you don't need a watch to know the distance you cover, so I recommend you do workouts that fit well into the track distances, e.g. 400m, 800m, 1600m, not 3min, 5min or 8min intervals. Then use the lap button (not a structured workout that is based on distance or time) at the start and end of each interval. Look only at the time (not the pace) of your recorded track sessions (if you want the pace, calculate it from the length of your intervals and the time measured). The accuarcy of this measurement is far greater than anything gps (even with track mode to guide it), can give you, since you can get the error well below 0.5 seconds.

The distance measured of the watch, especially when using track mode, will be fairly close to what you actually did, so the overall stats such as total distance covered or average pace will be very close, but for the places where you really care (and might want to analyse/compare), the actual times it took you for the 400s, 800s or 1600s, will be available to you in much higher precision.

As pointed out in the leading sentence, you can of course still adjust your track mode to the right lane during warmup, sets and cool down, since for lane 1 -> lane 7 the difference is a bit over 10%. Alternatively you could say good-bye to the perfect plots of the track-mode, use normal running mode instead and a footpod such as stryd to measure the distance - that will be similar to track-mode in accuracy but does not require re-configuring the watch - I would always recommend lap button intervals though, as the accuracy of this method is impossible to beat by distance measuring gadgets.

  • @Fredderic. Good description how to use a watch on a track.

Trackmode is for people who are obsessed with gps trails, not for people who do actual workouts on a track. At least in my opinion.
