Garmin Explore App cannot connect to my Forerunner 965

I have successfully connected my Forerunner 965 with Garmin Connect. But according to https://www.garmin.com/en-US/p/886725#accessories, Forerunner 965 is also compatible with Garmin Explore App. I have installed the app and tried to connect to my watch, hoping that it would make it easier to plan my routes (like hikes and bicycle tours), as I find Connect's course planner to be a bit cumbersome for that, especially when it comes to extra waypoint management.

In the Devices tab of Garmin Explore App it shows my Forerunner 965 as a compatible device (my other devices are in the Unsupported devices group). I did not have to add it, it was there from the beginning (I guess it's because I added it in Connect). If I try to add it again, there is no Forerunner 965 on the list (Forerunner 955 is there, for what it is worth). The device "tile" looks a bit broken with no device photo (just some placeholder camera icon is shown instead). It also says my device is Beta (I would happily enroll, but I don't think it's possible at this point in time, so I don't think I am running beta software). But all this would be irrelevant of course, if I could connect my Forerunner 965 in Garmin Explore. Unfortunately, when I click on my device tile, it takes me to a connection page with a guy walking his stick forever. I tried restarting my watch and restarting my phone. I tried to connect after a sync with Connect (with Connect running in the background or with it being killed) and before my watch manages to connect to Connect, all to no avail. How is this supposed to work?
