Bugs / Differences after a week ownership of the FR965 compared to the epix Gen 2

Had my epix over a year, and my forerunner 965 for a week, this is the difference I found, so far that stood out.

  • Torch:. When going to the torch, it always goes to the 2nd brightness setting. On the epix ot would go the last brightness level
  • Torch: cannot quit out of torch by holding your hand over the screen, on the epix this works
  • Garmin Pay: when you purchase an item, it quits out of the card screen. On the epix it stays there until you quit out
  • Always on display: Done three night trail runs so far, have the screen to always on for activities, yet it still goes to a blank / black screen. Having to tap the sreen or do a gesture for it to come back. Update Tried again last night and thsi time display did not turn off (which is expected) checked previous runs and they weren't during my Sleep settings.
  • Buttons: Not as tactile as the epix, still has a click, but softer
  • Audio: from watch the beeps are quieter than the epix.
  • Audio: from headphones, very average, base distorts, the callouts distort. Compared to the epix, the epix audio is a lot better (using Shokz Open Rup Pro)
  • Altitude calibration: I find setting the Altimeter on Manual, and auto calibrate at night more accurate. On the epix when starting an event, it would self-calibrate, and ask you of ok and give you the current altitude (where you can accept or re-calibrate) on the (965, the same setting it says it does this, but form practice it never does.
  • New Bug, when I was navigating a course last night, with touch enabled, the touch to zoom or move the map did not work, the zoom buttons were also not showing. Only has happened the once so far

  • Maybe, let's hope so.

Satellites, it was a pain setting all activities up since I prefer the non standard setting "all systems" (no multi band) but now when that's done I guess I'll forget about it...

I've had no issues with the map updates that I've read others have though, it updated just fine in Garmin Express and map manager on watch is happy. I'm glad I dodged that bullet :-)

  • What did you have to set up satellite wise?
With the 965 you suddenly realise that the Epix has the metal surround then a screen surround too. It does feel there are a large number of Epix owners moving over. I just hope the 965 lasts in the outdoors, I do think the metal surround has been useful at times.

    I am still not 100% I won't keep the Epix :(

  • On the 965 the satellite mode must be set under each and every activity, in case you don't want that default automatic mode (that was called Sat IQ on saphire Epix)

I'm not sure what to do with my Epix either, it fore sure feels and looks more exclusive, but on the other hand I guess I'´ll rarely be wearing it again so... I guess I'll keep it until I find something else to put the money in and then sell it :-)

  • I find them both the same for build quality I had the sapphire screen, but prefer Gorilla glass, as I do notice it's less reflective. But never really an issue.

  • You were right, today the graphs looks like expected :-)

  • The calendar doesn't seem to show events beyond 24h in the future? The Epix displayed at least a couple of days if not more?

  • That is a rare occurrence :) glad it worked out.

  • I can't seem to get beyond today either.

  • I am probably going to stick with the Epix - calendar, general operating system, I think I need the more rugged case, I dread to think how the 965 will look if I continue days in the mountains on granite rock.

  • I am gradually coming to this same conclusion, have not fully decided yet, but leaning heavily towards the Epix over the 965.
