Go for 965 or for 955 solar

Hello all,

I oscillate between the 955 solar and the 965.

Now that the new update for the 955 solar with wrist based running dynamics has come out, are there any differences at all in the functions?

I think the battery life of the 955 is great.
But also find the display of the 965 really nice!

But have a bit of fear that what could burn in the 965 (amoled also as with oled?) and that in the sun perhaps the display is difficult to read (in videos it is said that this works well?!).

Would be happy about your experiences before I put 600 bills.

Kind regards
Pascal

  • I have all disabled overnight and brightness on lowest. I prefer the AOD on as one can at least see the time indoors at a glance without a gesture. I am sure with AOD off the time will lengthen.

  • With my 965, I have the AOD turned off except when exercising. I do 30-60 minutes of exercise most days, usually alternating between non-GPS stuff like strength training and outdoorsy GPS-stuff like running. I charged my watch 8 days ago (Monday, April 3 in the evening here on the east coast of the United States) and currently have 56% battery. I'm also still playing with the watch a little bit, testing new watch faces, adjusting data screens, etc. I have a feeling I'll end up with 15-20 days on a regular charge without any difficulty at all. Hope that helps!

  • That fits very exactly into my usage pattern!
Anything over 7 days would be more than sufficient for me.

Can you actually generally set the AOD and gestures are only on during activities, or do you have to set that before each training session?

  • Yes, you can have independent settings for both AOD and gesture for regular use and for activities.

  • I just got 965 a week and half ago and I overall I am satisfied. I had also tough decision between 955 255 and 965.

    Very shortly:

AOD is readable in cloudy condition. In sunny condition barely and it is not comfortable to use.

With gesture, fully bright is perfectly readable in ANY condition even under heavy sun and don't trust anybody who says the opposite. Pictures don't reflect the reality and I don't even have set display on 100% brightness.  And I came from FR 230 with MIP so I have comparison.

Battery to me is wonderful. I don't have AOD outside activities. I have 965 for 10 days already and it came from 93% to 46%  with three cca 45 min running without music. And it is with a lot of playing with settings involved and sync/notification with phone 24/7.

My only serious complain is sensitivity of gesture which could be better. It is not a disaster by any means and it works, but sensitivity setting would be handy. I heard that VENU has this setting so this is my only hope for future update.

    Closure:

I was very reluctant to buy AMOLED as I always had MIP in before but I don't regret. And I am saying this as somebody who has watches mainly for running.    Yes, MIP is superb for fast and frequent glances to watch without gesture and in sunny conditions is marginally better, but in 95% other situations AMOLED is better.  Battery to my big surprise is not an issue at all to my usage.

I would consider 255/955 only for hardcore runners which have watch literally only for running. Then AMOLED is pointless, but if you use your watches not only for activities, Amoled is the way.

Another thing to consider is that 955 is really thick. I have tried it and this was really to much for my hand. 1mm difference is a lot.

  • Loving my 965 after 8 days. Haven't charged for a week, down to 56%. Done quite a lot of activities, and all notifications on (except 11pm-7am).

Screen brightness I've set on the lowest for general usage and it's been fine. While running it brightens when I move it to look at it and it has also been fine.

With the bigger display than the 955, being thinner, battery life being fine (to me it seems great) and just how much nicer the AMOLED screen is, I wouldn't want any other sport watch right now.

  • Thanks for your answers!

    I think I'll give the 965 a chance when it's available.

I also find the 965 more appealing overall, was just afraid of the readability in the sun.

  • Quick update. Ran in the midday sun with it today, found myself almost worried heading out. But it was completely fine. I think with the gesture thing it goes to max brightness when I look at it and just zero issue. I've moved from a MIPS Garmin and I'm totally happy.

  • For me the problem is that using gesture is a huge step backwards because I hated it on Fitbits/Apple Watches so I switched to Garmin for truly always on displays, even if they're dim indoors. Its a sports watch after all and I run/hike/ski/sail outside ;)

  • I wish there was an option for true AoD during activity as gesture is annoying and doesn't work as well as on AW. That being said, I actually have an easier time seeing the display once it's gestured on than on my 955 even in direct sunlight. I've never had a problem with my old aw3 either.
