Brightness very low on screen when outside

Is anyone having issues seeing the screen when outside especially during an activity? I ran yesterday when it was cloudy and the data screens were barely visible. Everything seems fine inside and screen is bright but when go outside it seems to get dimmer and is hardly visible.

  • I got my 965 yesterday and did my first run with it today. I did not notice this , other than the fact that (as I noted with the 265 I tried) the gesture is ,in my view, not sensitive enough to my taste and it would be nice to be able to adjust the sensitivity.

Is what you are experiencing not associated with the display going dimmer after a certain time until one does gesture again? I have the time out for that on extended.

  • I have the same thing. When the brightness is low, the watch works fine. If the brightness is fine the screen freezes and the watch reboots until it goes to the low brightness mode. Any news on your side? I will contact Garmin support in the next few days.

  • I have the same issue. Screen is going so dark is barely visible, even with the brightest settings. I don’t know what triggers it, but it’s always when outdoors.

Same issue here. Would be great to find a solution for this.

  • Has this been fixed?

I have a 955, but want to switch to 965 because of my old eyes :-)

Don’t. I have aging eyes and the fr965 isn’t better to see than a 955 (or 935 in my case). Yes, it’s bigger but not a huge difference. Yes, it’s readable in sunlight, but so is the mips screen. Yes, you can cramp more data on the 965 but aging eyes don’t like that.

you may switch anything you like for any reason. But if you have trouble reading your 955 screen due to aging eyes, you have the same trouble reading the 965 screen. (And maps are even less visible due to thinner lines)

  • I have to disagree with the visibility of the maps being the same. I'm coming from Fenix 5+, and the main advantage of 965 was the improved map contrast. The blacks are really black, and the increased color saturation (and number of available colors) makes maps much easier to read on 965, even if some lines are thinner. This is especially true under cloud cover, in a forest or in the evening, when Fenix 5+ maps were often difficult to read, even with backlight.

Good you add your experience. Guess we have to tell  that he has to look for himself in a store.

It used to be like that for me, but something happened (I suppose a software glitch) that significantly reduced the brightness to a degree that it isn’t legible outside anymore. Garmin agreed that the unit is faulty and are going to send me a new one. I attach a screenshot that should make this obvious.

  • I agree that everyone has to decide for themselves. No matter whether you choose MIP or AMOLED, you gain something and loose something. And it all depends on what's important to you and in which conditions you usually use your watch. (For example, I live in Finland, so I never get sun directly from above, but even outside I'm constantly using my watch in darker conditions, either under a heavy tree cover or during the winter. If you live in a sunny place nearer the equator, it's a completely different story. Slight smile )
