Why did Garmin implement an AMOLED on a sportwatch?

Don't get me wrong but I am both a 935 user and a Galaxy Watch user and I have been waiting to upgrade my 935 for a while now, but I think I will get the 955 instead of 965.

Price tag aside I really do not understand why Garmin is using an AMOLED on their Forerunner series... the MIP screens are the best in my opinion of outdoor sports

It looks like to me that they are putting an AMOLED to place this Forerunner against an Apple Watch or a Galaxy Watch as a "daily" smartwatch which the Forerunner isn't and it is going to be crushed in that regard and at the same time be a downgrade compared to the other Garmin sportwatches with a MIP screen.

What are your thoughs?

Also how is the software situation with the 955? I heard it is quite buggy at the moment.

  • That is so true...fortunately my Epix doesn't work that way...hence it is perfect for pool and open water activities!

  • I did a lot of kayaking and SUP'ing last summer and with my Epix display in AOD during activities, I can't recall any problems with the display. I used my Enduro 2 too, but at the end the Epix won and I finally sold the E2. I am sure that Gramin will increase the battery output and the brightness of the screen in the future even more IOT convince people the AMOLED is better than MIP. However, as long as there are enough people who prefer MIP over AMOLED, Garmin will produce these watches.

  • I'm curious: how does your Epix work in pool? Is it always on at highest brightness or is it dimmed and you have to turn wrist?

I have set my 955 backlight to "no timeout" after wrist rotation when I swim or run at night, so after first rotation it is always on

  • Nah, I want the latest option with the best features, but not amoled, and that option has been taken away.

  • I hope than moving forward peharps with the 975 they make 2 models a MIP model and an AMOLED model to give us the choice.

  • Fingers crossed

I bought the 955 to replace my galaxy watch 5 two weeks after I bought it. The amoled  was the main problem with the watch 5 for me.

It was just always the wrong brightness for any environment.  Too bright at night, too dim in sunlight. The 955 is so much better in nearly every way

  • My forerunner 935 is 13.9 mm thick.

    A forerunner 955 is a whopping 14.4 mm thick

A forerunner 965 is only 13.2 mm thick.

Amoled makes the watch less bulky, which is a good think in my opinion.

(just something to add yo the discussion besides price, batterylife and readability)

  • On the other side:

    FR245 had 42,3 mm

    FR255 has 45,6 mm

    FR265 has 46,1 mm

Too big to me for a clear running watch. Display size increased only 2.5 mm. FR256s not an argument, because it's display is even smaller than FR245.

FR965 is 1 mm larger than FR265 an display size is 2.5 mm bigger.

To me in total I would rise the question: Why are the sizes increasing for FR265? To me the only blocking point at the moment for FR265 ... maybe because of bigger display and map I would accept the size FR965 ... because it's not yet available, I'm waiting (maybe for better times).

  • It's getting bigger becuase tipical Garmin user is a man over 30 without good eyesight.

    Like me

  • To be honest, I appreciate increase of screen of 2.5 mm. But in parallel the watch size increased 4 mm ...  I would expect smaller border sizes if I look at mobile AMOLEDS ...

965 screen size increased 2.5mm, but watch size increased "only" 1mm ... better done
