Will 955 and 965 be basically the same software?

Will 955 and 965 be basically the same software?

Can we have hope that this will improve the bug situation with the 955? Will 955 be "dropped" from software updates in favor of the 965? Please elaborate on the development teams/software release cycles.

  • Garmin won't reply, I guess.

  • Garmin doesn't monitor these forums closely - if that's your expectation, you need to change that. This is almost 100% user-generated content.

  • This is covered in the DCRainmaker review. The expectation is that for at least the next year that the software updates should remain aligned, but at some point one can assume that the 965 will get updates that the 955 may not.

"In most ways, the Forerunner 965 is essentially an AMOLED display version of the Garmin Forerunner 955 (released just 9 months ago). In fact, even some of the new software features of the Forerunner 965 are already slated to arrive on the Forerunner 955 (and some have somewhat accidentally already arrived in the past few weeks via Garmin Connect online). In other words, the Forerunner 965 and Forerunner 955 will reach parity within the next quarter, but, when asked whether that would remain the case going forward (in effect having an AMOLED and non-AMOLED version of the same watch), Garmin was less confident. They said that for the meantime that was going to be the case, but longer term they’d probably diverge."

  • What dcrainmakers explains is not the real problem.

At the moment, the 965 has some features from the epix series which make use of the amoled display.

Also, the 965 has some features that will be ported to the 955 next quarter or so.

This all means, the 965 has a different firmware base and a different development team.

Expect different new bugs between the versions, bugs solved in one are not automatically solved in the other.

  • This watch will have the 955 errors plus the epix 2 errors plus the new ones generated by mixing them.

Meanwhile, garmin and the forerunner team ignoring this forums and its clients.

  • Hi,

Thanks to  we have the reply. https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/running-multisport/f/forerunner-955-series/326176/955-vs-the-265---my-experience-as-a-955-user

    • FRx55 share the same system software, 14.17 actually
    • FRx65 should share the same system software and the versionning is not the same

Sub-system are quite similar or identical so versionning will be the same (excluding TSC because of amoled for FRx65).

As you can see sub-system is the same on different product line (here F7/E2), which is a good thing for software developement and lifecycle.

  • Thanks for all the insight guys :-)

I also find it "funny" that like 40% of the comments on the FR965 DC Rainmaker test are bug related questions.

@Garmin: please fix your existing products before releasing new products!
