Disable screen alerts during Workout (too high / too low / in range...)

Hello,
I understand that it's not possible. I searched and didn't find anything that tells me how to do it, but just in case, I'll ask: during a workout on my bike, I follow the suggested zone, but sometimes the TOO HIGH/TOO LOW alerts on the screen are VERY ANNOYING, as they last a long time, and during that time, I can't keep checking the information. This is even worse when the workout intervals are very short.

Is there a way to remove these warnings?
Just showing me the range on the screen like it does when I follow a workout is enough. I don't need it to constantly show me TOO HIGH, TOO LOW, etc. on the screen. In fact, I have the workout alerts enabled, but when I see TOO HIGH... etc., it doesn't say it via audio (well, I think that could be worse...).
Thanks!

  • Does no one have a workaround to avoid these types of notifications?

Just seeing the target would be enough. The notifications are bad and function poorly, as they stay on the screen for too long, so if you adjust the intensity to meet the target, you can't see that change because the notification is full-screen. Not to mention that while this is happening, the 'too low,' 'too high,' and 'in range' notifications start overlapping, which means you cannot view the actual data for the metric you are evaluating or referencing for many seconds. I've already completed the Garmin Ideas form; it would be ideal to have the option to allow or disallow these types of notifications, or at least have them not be full-screen so one can still view other metrics during the workout.

    Thanks!

  • Is this a HR value?  If so, wouldn't have thought it would vary that much except that, for me anyway, it always drifts higher through the activity.  But measures like pace, or anything else that needs GPS can fluctuate quite a lot. Garmin will no longer use average pace (since FR945)

FWIW - my workaround is to not use targets at all in the workout display as it just generates noise.  For a while I was setting a large range in the target to avoid constant notifications but then it's not really helping a lot - it still fluctuates between a lot over or a lot under so you can't use it all to guide you.

Plonk your target (eg lap pace) in one of your activity data screens and just go by that, that's been very successful for me.

  • Thanks a lot for the response and the tip!
No, in this case it's Cycling Power (3s Power), but something similar happened to me when I guided myself by the HR, perhaps with fewer notifications because the variations are smaller and they barely overlapped, but the problem was still there. On top of that, when a target is assigned, the objective value disappears from the screen one or two seconds after it's shown; it doesn't stay there permanently, I have to switch screens and go back to the Workout screen to see it again.

Sorry, I didn't understand. How do you assign a value to have it on a Data Screen? Of course, for me, just seeing the value is enough, as you say, the alerts become useless. What I need is to remember my objective for each interval for example:

    10 min WU @ 160W
    This block x 3:
    15 min @ 250W
    1 min @ 300W
    1 min @ 250W
    1 min @ 300W
    Rest 3 min @ 160W
    CD 20 min @ 160W

What I'm getting at is, simply showing me the objective during that lap is enough for me. I don't need it to be guiding me since I've verified that it's not useful, and what I want is to see the objective for each lap so I don't have to memorize it or write it down on the handlebar :P
Although, now that I think about it—or perhaps this is what you suggested—I could create the workout without a target and assign the objective value to the NOTES field just to read it, or even hear it via an Audio Note... I'll have to try that.

  • I did some tests, but that doesn't work either, since it could be a reference, but I would have to generate all the Workouts manually. They wouldn't take the data updates like FTP, etc., to display that information. It's a shame that you can't disable that guidance/alert, or at least that it isn't so disruptive. I tried the audio notes and that doesn't work either because they don't play :(

  • Are you using power pedals?  It sounds like you should be, can't see how you would get meaningful data without them especially since you have quite specific targets in your sessions so whatever you get needs to be accurate.

To elaborate on the data screen thing - other than setting interval timings in a workout I don't set any targets at all and I don't use the workout display at all, just switch to a defined data screen where you can have what you want - lap power, lap pace are much more useful than something like 3s power which is still going to be all over the place without power pedals.

The note at the start of the interval still comes up - good luck if you can read it though, it's pretty small.

Also, I've found Garmin computed power to be overstated, at least by 20%, for running power anyway - no idea what it might do for cycling, but you should be aware of this possibility, you might be undertraining.
