Request: Always Save Recovery Heart Rate in Garmin Connect

Hi, I use the Forerunner 955 mainly for endurance sports like SUP racing.
I’ve noticed that the Recovery Heart Rate is only saved in Garmin Connect if I manually check it right after finishing an activity.
Older models like the 910 used to display it automatically, and I believe this metric is important for training analysis.

Please consider making Recovery Heart Rate automatically saved with every activity record.
Thanks!

  • The recovery heart rate is saved and visible in Garmin Connect if you keep the watch on the resume/save/etc. menu for two minutes after pausing the activity with start/stop button, regardless of whether you choose Recovery heart rate. Choosing Recovery heart rate from the menu just gives you a timer to see when two minutes has passed (and shows the hr on the watch). So the only change from older watches (if I remember correctly) is that current watches don't show the recovery hr on the watch automatically.

  • Thanks so much for sharing that detail—really appreciate it! I wasn’t aware of the 2-minute condition after pausing. I’ll try it out in my next session and report back once I’ve confirmed how it behaves on my Forerunner 955.

Update: I tried the method you suggested (pause the activity and keep it on the resume/save menu for 2 minutes).
It worked! The recovery heart rate was successfully saved and visible in Garmin Connect.
Thanks again for sharing this detail—it is very helpful for my SUP training and health management.

  • Now that I understand the recovery HR *is* saved if I keep the watch on the pause screen for two minutes, I’d like to refine my request:
Would it be possible for Garmin to bring back the **automatic on-watch display** of Recovery Heart Rate, like older models did (e.g. Forerunner 910XT / ForAthlete 910XTJ in Japan)?

The data is clearly useful and already being recorded in Connect—it would just be great to have the number shown on the watch right after each activity without needing to select the menu option.

This would make training analysis and day-to-day use much smoother.

  • I'm pretty sure removing automatic recovery hr display was an intentional decision from Garmin. Remember, when you press start/stop, you are just pausing the activity, not ending it. So if you just want to pause and continue soon, you don't want the risk of having the recovery hr display pop up just when you have to continue the activity.

(Another reason might be that Garmin has noticed that most people don't use recovery hr any more now that there are many other metrics available from the watch.)

  • Thank you for your reply. It’s very interesting to hear that Garmin watches now offer more metrics. However, I’m not yet familiar with what other metrics are available besides Recovery Heart Rate. If you don’t mind, could you please share which other metrics are useful for training and health management? I’d love to learn more and make better use of them going forward.

  • What I simply meant is that since VO2max, training load, recovery time, etc. have been added to sports watches, probably not that many people follow their recovery heart rate, especially since it can vary depending on the exercise you have done. Those other metrics are not a direct replacement of recovery heart rate, but maybe (maybe, how should I know?) Garmin no longer considers recovery heart rate popular enough so that everyone should automatically see it after an activity...

  • Just to follow up, I actually received an official reply from Garmin Japan Support regarding the Recovery Heart Rate.
They confirmed that if you stop the activity timer and wait two minutes before saving, the recovery HR is automatically measured and saved to Garmin Connect—without any extra steps.

They also pointed me to the official Forerunner 955 manual where this behavior is explained.

I honestly hadn’t realized it was already documented, so I felt a bit embarrassed at first Sweat smile—but at the same time, I was impressed by how sincerely Garmin Support responded.
It makes me appreciate the brand even more.

  • You shouldn't be embarrassed.

It's perfectly natural to assume that recovery hr is not being automatically measured since Garmin removed the previously prominent indication of that from the user interface.

It's understandable that they wanted to remove the full-screen recovery HR UI, as it's intrusive, especially in the case that a user pauses their watch without the intention of ending the activity.

But they could've made a compromise - maybe display a small indicator or notification which tells the user that recovery HR is being measured. I doubt they would do this in any case, as it seems they want to minimize the future altogether (like Bitti said) and/or there's probably no notification/indicator they could display which wouldn't be somewhat annoying when you don't want to see it.

What I would probably do, if I worked at Garmin:

    - since the pause menu *still* contains the Recovery HR item, use that item to *also* indicate whether it's currently being measured

Today the menu item just says: "Recovery Heart Rate"

Tomorrow it could say: "Recovery Heart Rate: Measuring [2:00]", where "2:00" is a live countdown. And once the countdown is finished, it could show you your recovery hr. e.g. "Recovery Heart Rate: 55 bpm"

  • Thank you, flowstate.
As you said, since the recovery HR no longer appears automatically on the watch screen, I just assumed it wasn’t being measured anymore.
Your idea of using the existing “Recovery Heart Rate” item in the pause menu to also indicate when it’s being measured is a very reasonable compromise.
I would really appreciate such a design, and I hope Garmin will consider it as well.

    Flowstate
