Cycling 40km maximum average speed?

Is there a way to show 40km maximum average speed for a cycling activity without deleting my personal record before the activity?

Garmin calculates this at the end of every cycling activity that is 40km or over in length in order to determine whether a personal record has been set.

It would be helpful if this figure was available within the activity in the same way that max. average power over 20 minutes is shown and is available for various intervals on the power chart.  It would be helpful if other distances than 40km were available also.

  • Maybe you won't like this answer, but use runalyze.com, a free website that syncs with your Connect account.

Open your activity in runalyze, select the magic wand icon, and click "Find best sub segments".

For running, this shows my best pace for several predefined distances ranging from 100 m to 42.2.km, including 40.0. I've never run over 42.2 km, but runalyze said that the distances go up to 100 km. It also shows best pace for predefined amounts of time, and best power for predefined amount of time (but not distance)

I assume that the same data should be available for cycling, but in terms of speed and not pace. I'm not a cyclist, so I'm not 100% sure.

For a more cycling-focused site, you can try veloviewer.com, but it's not free. The advantage here is that is that you can set any distance or time you want, and it shows you your N best (fastest) splits along with time/distance, pace, HR, power, cadence and elevation, where N is the number of your choice.

For example you could open a cycling activity in veloviewer and select your 2 best splits for any given distance. (The only thing is that it will not calculate overlapping splits, so if you want your best two 40km splits, for example, you need to have biked at least 80 km)
