Running Metrics Adjustment Screen, review?

New to the Garmin 955 Series but not new to Garmin having owned a 735XT and a 745 before ...

This morning after my run and saving it i got a screen that showed a list of Metrics (i just caught lactic threshold with a green dot next to it and what looked like a white arrow in it). Me being a slow reader and not expecting it missed most of that screen before it switch to telling me that it detected a new Max HR value and that screen stayed until i selected the "start" button. (no amount of up and down switched back to the other window just scrolled that HR Adjustment text)

Is there anyway of seeing that Metrics "adjustment" screen again? Kinda annoyed for 1 missing it and 2 not being able to find it again?

I have tried googling for a picture of said screen but my googlefoo is letting met down or the fact that it doesn't seem to show for long "prevents" people from snapping a foto of it?

If anybody know what screen i'm talking about and know where to view it again, some directions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

  • You mean this screen?

Yeah there's no way to see it again, unfortunately. What you can do is set a hotkey to take screenshots, and take a screenshot when you see a screen like this that you want to remember. You can see screenshots by connecting your watch to a PC or Mac with a USB cable(yup, that's the *only* way :/). If you use a Mac, you'll need 3rd party software like openmtp to browse files on your FR955.

It would be nice if Garmin would just let you see that screen after the fact, and if they would put the same information in Connect, but for some reason they don't do that.

Well, I guess they do put the following metrics in Connect / elsewhere on your watch:

    - training status [the value as of this activity will only be available for a short time]

    - acute load [this value is available on Connect forever, on a per-activity basis]

    - VO2 Max [but not the exact trendline that you see next to the number which indicates whether the activity caused in increase, decrease, or no change in Vo2 Max]. It's also tough to see exact history of your VO2 Max [as historical data is rounded in Connect] - the historical graph is unrounded in the Training Status > VO2 Max graph, but you still can't see the original unrounded numbers, nor easily correlate points on the graph to a given activity.

    - recovery time [except as time passes, you won't know the original recovery time for the activity, as the watch / Connect only shows you the remaining recovery time]

The change in VO2 Max and recovery time at the end of the activity can be determined by 3rd-party tools. See next comment.

  • You should also be able to see some of the same data that was on that screen by exporting your activity FIT file and opening it in a 3rd party site:

    1) open Garmin Connect website and log in: https://connect.garmin.com/

    2) navigate to the activity of interest

    3) select the gear icon (upper-right hand corner)

    4) select Export File. This will export the original FIT file, in a ZIP

    5) open https://www.fitfileviewer.com/ and open the FIT file you just exported

    6) The combination of the User Metrics, Activity Metrics, and Session tables should show you the same data that you see on the post-run screen

    User Metrics includes:

    - vo2 max (to 2 decimal places). I *think* this is the user vo2 max at the end of the activity (and corresponds to what was seen in Connect and on the watch's VO2 Max glance)

    - first vo2 max (to 4 decimal places). I *think* this is the user vo2 max at the beginning of the activity (and corresponds to what was seen in Connect and on the watch's VO2 Max glance). By comparing "first vo2 max" to "vo2 max", you can tell whether the your vo2max increased, decreased or stayed (roughly) the same, due to the activity. Ofc we don't know what Garmin's tolerance is for "same" vs "increasing" or "decreasing", as far as fractional vo2 max values

    - beginning potential (stamina)

    - initial body battery

    - lthr (not sure if this is before or after activity, and I'm not sure if there would be additional columns if a new lthr was detected)

    - ltspeed

    - maxhr (not sure if this is before or after activity)

    Activity Metrics includes:

    - new hr max (this may be misleading, since it isn't necessarily applied, even if it's lower than your current max hr)

    - recovery time (this should match what was on the post-run screen)

    - final body battery

    - vo2 max (i think this is per-activity, as opposed to user's rolling average VO2 Max or w/e)

    - first vo2 max (but if "vo2 max" is per-activity, this field doesn't really make sense, unless it means the first vo2 max that was calculated during the activity?)

    - ending potential (stamina)

    Session includes:

    - training load peak (i assume this is the same as training load) (but ofc you can see this in Connect, too)

Pros and cons of the 3rd party approach:

    Pros:

    - you get some of the data with greater precision that what's shown on the watch / Connect (notably, VO2 Max)

    Cons:

    - it's an annoying manual procedure

    - it may not always be clear exactly which data in the FIT file corresponds to what's on the watch screen / Connect

Another way to look at *some* of this data is to use runalyze.com, a free site that syncs with Connect. Unfortunately, it only seems to show the activity VO2 Max in FIT file, not the user VO2 Max in FIT file. [The user VO2 Max in runalyze is independently calculated by runalyze, and doesn't really match what your Garmin calculates.]

  • No unfortunately not that display, the display i saw looked something like this.

I've done the screenshot shortcut if i do see that display pop up again i'll try my best to get a screenshot of it. The green dot i specifically remember Lactate Threshold next to it as the green instantly drew my eye. That is when i tried to pay more attention and the screen went away to show the New MAX HR Detected Text.

Thank you for taking the time to reply, i kinda just wish they would make the displays that you need to navigate through them, i've missed so many displays even on my 745 where i stop the activity, save it and then either someone calls me or i just need a moment to breath after a hard workout and i just hear my watch going Bleep, Bleep, Bleep and i look and it is flashing through segment, PR's, etc and i have no idea what i missed. Sure those show up later in Garmin connect as well but it kinda looses the "sparkle" after 2 hours or so when i eventually check the activity on my phone.

  • You mean this screen?

    (Yeah, I'm in horrible shape)

I just got this screen after what my watch thought of as a hard tempo run. When I look in Connect, my current LT HR, pace, and power are reflected in in the Performance Stats > Lactate Threshold screen.

But ofc, that may not help if you want to see how it changed for a *specific activity*.

Going back to what I said before, this information is actually in the activity FIT file - with the a caveat. The FIT file has your values from *before* the activity, not after.

If you open an activity FIT file in fitfileviewer.com, you will see:

    - In the User Profile table: time last-lthr update

    - In the User Metrics table: lthr, ltpower, ltspeed

All of these are from the start of my run, not the end.

In my case, I recorded a dummy run after my tempo run, and inspected *that* in fitfileviewer.com. Sure enough, it says my LT was updated during my previous (actual) run, and the values match what the screen says.

If your max HR or VO2 Max was updated during a run, you could use a similar method to determine how it was updated:

    - look at the current value in Connect

    or

    - record another activity and look at the corresponding data in fitfileviewer.com

It is a shame that in some cases, the updated value at the end of activity is not recorded in the FIT file :/.

  • And it's also a shame that the corresponding info is not displayed in Connect or the watch (I mean, alongside the activity).

But ofc if it's not even recorded in the FIT file, then there's zero chance the watch/Connect would be able to associate it with the activity in question.
