Watch freezing

I have a Forerunner 955 running software version 23.20.  I have noticed that after I take it off to charge it, when I put the watch back on, it freezes.  I can still hold the light button down to get it to shut down, eventually (has taken a while to get it to properly shut down before).  Seems to freeze about 30 s to 1 min after putting the watch back on.  I can power cycle to eventually get it working again, but sometimes have to power cycle multiple times and is rather time consuming.  Are there any solutions for this?

  • I actually got this working.  It started freezing up every few minutes and became completely unusable.  Every time I even tried to click into the system menu, it appeared to restart.  I saw something on reddit about putting it in the freezer for a few minutes.  I did this, and it would let me get into the system menu -> restart -> delete data and reset to factory settings

Once I did this, it appeared to freeze about 75% of the way through the reset process.  I power cycled the watch, and it finished resetting.  When I went to connect my watch to my phone, it went into this strange quasi state appearing connected to Garmin Connect, but the watch didn't appear connected.  I had to forget the watch from my phone bluetooth settings, then hard reset the watch again.  This time it connected to my phone normally and it has been working fine ever since without any freezing or restarting.

  • My watch started freezing again.  It freezes up a few times a day, although not as bad as before.  I've hard reset it a few times, and it always keeps freezing.  It actually froze in the middle of my most recent triathlon.  I'm very disappointed in this watch.  I've seen some people roll back the software by connecting it to a laptop over the MTP server, but mine won't connect to the laptop for some reason.  I have always liked Garmin, but after this, I'm going to be exploring other watch options for my next workout watch.

  • I have exactly the same issue. It has sometimes frozen whilst on a run, but more typically just when sitting on my wrist in basic watch mode. I don't know whether this is a result of a recent software update, but it basically makes the watch unusable as a watch (unless you're happy with it being accurate twice a day!).

Is it a hardware issue, or software? The device is pretty much useless at the moment - help, please Garmin.

  • Ok, I think I found a real fix this time.  I ran across the solution in the depths of the comment section of a thread on reddit.  I reinstalled the software.  After having done so, I've tested a number of scenarios that would throw my watch into a reboot loop or cause it to freeze, and I have had no issues since the reinstall.  To perform a reinstall, at least at the time of this writing on my Forerunner 955, I did the following:

    1. go to settings
    2. scroll down and press 'system'
    3. scroll down and press 'about'
    4. press the light button 8 times
    5. this brought up a new list of options, one of which is 'reinstall'
    6. after pressing 'reinstall' the watch went through a normal SW installation cycle and came back up after a few restarts (I'd guess total time about 3 mins)

After this process, I've had no issues after some testing on my part, so I think this is the real solution.

  • I just posted what has fixed my watch.  I was actually starting to look at other watches from Suunto, because I agree with you, it was just plain unusable.  I happened to read back through comments on a reddit post that seemed related, and ran into a potential solution.  I tried it, and so far it has fixed my watch.  I'm grateful, because I'm been careful with it and it is still in good shape and has a ton a life left.  The steps I just posted may work for you as well.  I wanted to reply directly to you to make sure you get the notification.

  • Thank you, I very much appreciate you taking the trouble to so diligently reply to me - I shall try this fix over the weekend and report back!

  • The watch froze up again. I guess I'll just reinstall every 3 or 4 days. I assume they will patch it.

  • I assume they will patch it.

No, probably not as this happens to *some* people, but not to everyone that has 23.20. Might be hardware issue related.

So I would suggest that you definitely contact support.garmin.com - you might need a replacement unit.

  • How old is your watch? Mine must be about three years, I think.
