Golf Measure Shot Question

I am a new FR 955 owner. I did not buy it for golf functionality, but having front/middle/back distances on my wrist is a nice to have add to my GPS and laser devices. The first round of golf that I played I found the 955 to be displaying the distance from the last shot at the top of the main screen. I have not been able to do this since that first round (it was only a couple of holes and I truly was not paying a lot of attention at that time).

How exactly do I get this function back? Shot detection seems to be working fine, BTW. And I can go through the manual shot distance measure process just fine. I am looking to simply see front/middle/back green distances and last shot distance on my main watch screen. I don't care about automatic scoring one way or the other. I am using Version 23.20, BTW.

Thanks.

  • I played again today and am still unable to find a way to get my FR 955 to display how far I am from my last shot on the main screen (golf mode)  of my device. Today I played a couple holes using automatic scoring (mostly to verify that it was detecting shots - not a problem). I then tried again without using automatic scoring and just could not find a way to get last shot distance on my main screen (without hitting a bunch of buttons on the watch on any shot that I wanted a last shot distance). HOWEVER, at one point in the round (hole #14, IIRC) suddenly there was the distance from my last shot on the main screen. I have no idea why it was there. And it did not update when I took another shot - it just kept showing the cumulative distance from that first shot. It all reset when I got to the next hole and I never saw that again.

Any help out there? ChatGPT seems to think that using manual scoring is required here (and that the device does not use shot detection through the accelerometers but through GPS movement somehow). But I have not been able to make those suggestions work either.

    Thanks.

  • I played again yesterday and, except for a hole or two, the real time display of yardage from the last shot worked just fine. I have no clue about what is going on here (I used automatic scoring, BTW).

  • I played 2 consecutive rounds where the real time display of yardage worked as expected. In my round today it did not work at all (showing only the hole/par/yardage where 'real time distance from the last shot' had been showing). I have no clue what is going on (and it would appear that no one does).

  • In the same boat.  Recently (I've posted my troubles) I got a new refurb model.  After getting this model, the shot registration has stopped working.  Sometimes it works with practice swings, although it never works with real swings at this point.

I can confirm though, that yes, you do need to turn on scoring in order for the shot detection to work, you should also turn on the club prompt.  Again, these things used to work before 23.20 version.

  • Thanks for the response. FWIW, my watch (new purchase 2 months ago) seems to be pretty effective at detecting full swing shots. It is just the Shot Measure function (displayed in real time on the main screen) that is literally hit or miss (but consistent across a single round).

  • So when it works, it will register your shots, and you can see them on the application afterwards?  It will just not show the distance update while you're walking?  I just went back into look at my app, and it does look like the shots are registered (although not all of them) on the map.  I assumed they wouldn't be there and never bothered to look since the measurement wasn't showing.

So ya, I guess I'm in the same boat, where it's tracking shots, although it looks like the shot data is:

    - Not really working off the tee (most holes have approach shots but not driver shots)

    - The par 3s look like they are teeing off away from the tee deck, I recently updated my maps, so maybe that's the issue

I have an active issue opened with the Garmin Golf team, so maybe something will pop up from that.

  • I really don't know if the shots get transferred to Garmin Connect or not as I have never bothered to save a round. I have both laser and GPS devices (I use ShotScope for shot tracking). I didn't buy my FR955 for golf functionality, but having real time distance live on my wrist at all times is very handy. It takes a couple of button pushes to get it on my ShotScope device so it is simply a minor convenience item. I can tell that shots are registered from the scores that it asks me to confirm after each hole. But I have never even bothered to save a round as ShotScope is my goto for that.

  • Shotscope watch looks like a decent alternative if they can't sort out the nonsense and keep saying that a new watch is needed.

  • I use the H4 device that clips onto my (Shotscope) laser rangefinder. It requires that you touch your club sensor to the device before each shot, but if you remember then shot detection is 100%. But the UI has its own quirks, but nothing that would offend a regular Garmin user :-)

  • Hrm.. I just saw that the things are required for the watch to work as well.  Not sure I'm about that tag on the end of my clubs lifestyle.  I tried the Arccos for a bit and that wasn't for me.   Disappointed
