Altimeter

So it appears the altimeter on my watch is broken. For the last two weeks my watch has been giving me bogus elevation data throughout the day and during runs. While working I get at least 3 different notifications that I've reached my elevation goals for the day even though I've climed no stairs, hills, or anything that would trigger the notification. It also appears elevation data is wrong on pretty much every run and the elevation profile is a disaster. Thanks to strava we're able to replace device data with strava data, or else I'd be left with incorrect data. Very frustrating Confused

  • Have you contacted Support, I normally use the chat function to start.

  • So it appears the altimeter on my watch is broken.

Altimeter readings are from a combination of sources: GPS altitude information (not great), topology map corrections to the GPS info, and the barometer sensor. They're easily confused.

  • I cleaned the altimeter sensor yesterday and thought the problem was resolved after a run, but it's all over the place again. I'll likely call support this week. However after the latest update it appears the elevation graph has a bug were all elevation gathered (in green) suddenly disappears and there's a bunch of numbers. I checked the fix report for this update and it mentions an issue with the elevation graph. It's obviously not fixed. If a stable software releases I'll likely never update again.

  • Try a reinstall of the software. I had the same issue and it was resolved by reinstall. Ymmv

  • If you cleaned with warm water/soap and reinstalled and still have this issue, contact support.

They replaced my unit which had a screwed up barometer with a refurb unit. Garmin support is great.

  • Is there a way to disable the devices altimeter/elevation data and record only GPS data?
