Why does "change sport" always show "sport change discarded"?

I often use the HIIT sport, and sometimes in the middle of HIIT I'll run. I would like to track my running separately so that I know how far I ran and my pace. While in HIIT, I'll hold the up key and then the menu allows me to select "change sport." I'll then select "run." It'll track my run. Then, when I'm done running and want to go back to HIIT, I'll hold down the up key and select "return to HIIT." It'll return to recording HIIT and show a red pop-up that says "sport change discarded." What am I doing wrong?

  • Then, when I'm done running and want to go back to HIIT, I'll hold down the up key and select "return to HIIT." It'll return to recording HIIT and show a red pop-up that says "sport change discarded."

As unintuitive as this will sound, the "Return to [previous sport]" menu item is actually supposed to discard the previous sport change.

The correct way to change back to HIIT is to select Change Sport again, then select HIIT.

You are not the first person to be bit by this quirk - someone else in the forums posted a really similar thread.

  • Thank you! Just tried and that worked. Never would have guessed that.

  • I had the same confusion and started to use "change sport" instead "return to".

But it is an obvious user experience bug.

  • Yeah it should probably be labelled "cancel sport change" or something. Garmin probably wants to emphasize that cancelling the sport change will return to previous sport, and they want to remind you what the previous sport was.

But they could handle that by displaying a full screen prompt when you select "Cancel Sport Change". Something along the lines of "Cancel sport change and return to Run activity? [ White check mark/ X]"
