heart rate problem 955 and HRM-dual

This morning on my long endurance run (in zone 2, HR usually between 122 and 128), my heart rate indicator jumped sharply up several times (see image). I was running with a heart rate belt Hrm-dual. In the past, I sometimes encountered this for the first two kilometres, but after that, everything went fine. Now several more ‘upsurges’ occurred during the course of my run. I ran at about the same speed (+/- 5:40) and cadence (+/- 167) the whole time. The calculation of my average heart rate, and thus my VO2max, was obviously strongly influenced by this.

What could be the cause of this?

I already read about problems of heart rate abnormalities with the wrist heart rate, but I didn't hear about problems with a heart rate belt.

  • the strap is probably worn out. did you compare with the readings of the optical hr sensor of your watch?

  • But this heart rate belt is less than 10 months old. I bought it new after the previous one also showed such unreliable heart rates (periods of way too high heart rates).
Looking at the FIT file in Fit File Viewer, I can indeed see that the wrist heart rate shows a much more normal progression. So the HRM-Dual will indeed already be worn out. Extraordinarily fast anyway!

  • Check if the sensor isn't separating into two pieces. Mine, around the same time, started doing this and was giving me extremely high HR readings. I don't know if it's because it starts separating and makes poor contact, or because it's not properly sealed, allowing sweating/moisture to enter the sensor. In that case, it's best to contact Garmin Support directly. I understand this happens when removing the sensor from the strap during weekly cleaning, since the sensor consists of three pieces, but two are glued together.

    Whoops.

Might have been a bad batch. I use my HRM Dual since February 2021 (!). So more than four years.
And I remove the sensor *after every training* from the strap, rinse the strap with water and let it dry and dry the sensor.
    No issues with the sensor!

Only problem I had (after roundabout 1 year) was with the strap itself, the electrodes started to peal off. Contacted support.garmin.com, received a replacement and with a bit superglue, I also could use the original strap for some more years.

  • Yes, possible, this is the first time this has happened to me with the sensor, and just in case, since this happened, I'm removing it with a flat spatula from the center to avoid pulling on the outer piece, which is what came loose.
I've also had the same problem than you with the strap: the electrodes came loose, and Garmin replaced that one for me, even out of the warranty period, Garmin Support is excellent quality. That's why sometimes the best thing to do in these cases is to contact Support.

The superglue tip worked for me too, I think you answered that in another old thread or it was another user, thanks, every few months it needs a little more superglue but the strap still works perfectly.

That still looks good on my sensor. Those two parts are still very much attached to each other. I also remove the sensor from the strap after each run to rinse the strap.
