Instable connection to smart trainer with Ant+ after firmware update to 21.22

I have used my Garmin Forerunner 955 to control my smart trainer elite suito.

The connection via ant+ worked flawless for the last year. After Firmware update of FR 955 to 21.22, the connection is very instable and the 955 is now useless as a Controller for the smarttrainer.

Description of the procedure:

  • The smarttrainer is found by the 955 immediately.
  • The connection is established and the smart trainer indicates a ant+ connection.
  • After start of the Workout, the smart trainer indicates that ant+ connection is lost and the power is no longer controlled by the 955. The 955 however does not indicates a lost connection.
  • The connection will not be re-established automatically.

What i have done already to fix the problem without any success:

  • Reboot FR955 and smart trainer
  • Factory reset of FR955
  • Update smart trainer Firmware
  • Smart trainer works flawless with BT comnection to Smartphone
  • FR955 has same connection issues with other smart trainer (also elite suito)

Is this an issue with 21.22 formware  of the 955 or is it a hardware problem with my specific FR955.

  • Did you check the stand-alone mode on your trainer?

I had a similar issue, open a ticket with Elite, and they provided me with this link:

    https://elitesrl.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/6877833313938-Stand-alone-mode-for-interactive-trainers

I turned off the plugged option, and it's been working flawlessly since then.

  • Hey many thanks for this advice. Will try if this helps and report here if this solves my issues.

  • I have testet it today again witb no success.

My e-training app reports an error when i try to enter the Parameter "stand alone/ plugged in trainer"

I have tested it with both, the Android App and the Windows PC App from elite. All other parameter could be accesed and modified.

What i have tested now as well, is a connection with my Windows PC running mywoosh together with an ant+ dongle. This worked flawless without any Interuption.

So my conclusion is again, that either the New fr955 Firmware or the fr955 Hardware is the problem.

Has anyone else problems with ant+ connection to a smart trainer with the new garmin firmware?

  • I learned that Elite trainers expect more frequent active control from ant+ devices than the forerunner sends.

That was the reason for changing the plugged stand-alone setting.

I have no issues with my watch.

I suggest you open a ticket with Elite to determine what's happening on both sides.

  • Elite Support provided a json file as a work around for the known problem that the standalone Feature can not be deactivated.

It works now. Power is adjusted again using the garmin watch. Even though the ant+ connection is still instable (green ant+ light flashing all the time).
