Yet another watch stuck in boot loop

I was charging my watch this morning. As I disconnected the charger, the watch reset and is now stuck in the dreaded boot loop. I've tried restarting, doing the master reset (it works, I hear the two beeps), but it's still stuck on the boot loop.

I guess there's not much else to try. Any other magical step I could try?

I've already sent an email to support, but the watch is likely not in warranty anymore (bought 2nd hand), so I have low hopes.

Thanks!

edit: I've managed to get it going by doing the factory reset properly. Follow enkaytee's instructions and it seems to work.

edit2: once you've reset, do not go back into a RUN activity or you'll likely get stuck in the boot loop again. Wait for Garmin to update the firmware or somehow revert back to an older version (is this possible?)

Last edit: this appears to be a global issue on multiple watches, 255/265/955/965 both on beta AND stable FW. Garmin is aware and hopefully working on a fix. If you do not use GPS, it shouldn't go in the bootloop... GL everyone.

  • As stated earlier in this now very long thread, it is pretty certain that the CPE file is corrupted and my theory is that this is caused by decommissioning a satellite yesterday, see:

    www.navcen.uscg.gov/gps-constellation

  • I reset the watch and did not install the backup when asked, nor did I install any apps or clockfaces that I hav had on it previously. I did pair it to my phone and added the watch to Garmin Connect and did the setup procedure (without adding IQ store app or any music app), I also syncronized the watch so the acticity data and training schedule and other was on the watch.

I have done this four to five times, problems with the loop have always started after I have installed some of the apps that I previously had and watchfaces. With a "clean" watch I have been able to start, save, remove, walking and running activities with GPS several times without the looping started, I ahve also been able to plot a course on the map with the watch.

  • Hey all...
I have been trying for more than 10 hours to find a temporary or permanent solution by reseting to factory settings multiple times, what eventually seem to have been working for me, is to re-install software update. Go to:
Main Menu -> System -> About -> now press 8 times "Light Button" until you see "Reinstall Software" -> click to re-install

From that point I have been able to connect to my device, restore my back-up, have the watch log 1-hour GPS tracked activity (Walk), and it still hasn't rebooted yet!
So, fingers crossed... hope this is a solid solution and helpful for many of other users.

  • My Garmin Venu 3 has also gone into the boot loop a couple of hours ago. I hope we get a fix proposal or a rollback to something safe soon.. this is not cool for a reputable vendor like Garmin..

  • During the reset procedure, I only get the first beep.  Releasing the Start button after the first beep and I waited about 30-45 secs on a couple tries.  Still no second beep.

  • My guess is a similar class of problem to the CloudStrike BSODs certain places got back in July 2024: unexpected values in data causing the software to crash.

  • Same problem with my FR955. None of the suggested solusions work. The watch is no longer operable and therefore cannot be used.

  • I'm having the same issue. My forerunner 955 went into a boot loop when I tried starting an activity earlier today. I mentioned to do a hard reset as described by Artek_78 which got the device running again, but I don't dare starting an activity again. Software version is 21.22. An OTA update was applied somewhere over the last week.

Looking forward to get a recommendation on next steps.

  • Possible solution - temporarily do not use synchronization with Garmin Connect and delete the content in the folder in Garmin/RemoteSW if it is there.

After the factory reset (if you have already done one), do not use synchronization with Garmin Connect (disable Bluetooth and Wi-Fi) and do not enter GPS activity. Connect the watch to a PC and delete all content in Garmin/RemoteSW. I had 3 files there, including a bad CPE.bin file. After that, my watch stopped rebooting on GPS activities.

But it should be taken into account that without CPE.bin the watch will initially take a long time to search for satellites.
