Yet another watch stuck in boot loop

I was charging my watch this morning. As I disconnected the charger, the watch reset and is now stuck in the dreaded boot loop. I've tried restarting, doing the master reset (it works, I hear the two beeps), but it's still stuck on the boot loop.

I guess there's not much else to try. Any other magical step I could try?

I've already sent an email to support, but the watch is likely not in warranty anymore (bought 2nd hand), so I have low hopes.

Thanks!

edit: I've managed to get it going by doing the factory reset properly. Follow enkaytee's instructions and it seems to work.

edit2: once you've reset, do not go back into a RUN activity or you'll likely get stuck in the boot loop again. Wait for Garmin to update the firmware or somehow revert back to an older version (is this possible?)

Last edit: this appears to be a global issue on multiple watches, 255/265/955/965 both on beta AND stable FW. Garmin is aware and hopefully working on a fix. If you do not use GPS, it shouldn't go in the bootloop... GL everyone.

  • Hi.

Just to pile on to all the other threads regarding the "blue triangle of death" on my forerunner 955.

Completely out of the blue (that is not immediately following the last software update) my FR955 started to enter what seems to be an infinite boot loop as soon as I enter push the start button. It goes on showing the favorite activity ("Run") for one second and then the blue triangle (that we usually see during a normal reboot) appears, then the screen goes black for a second, the triangle re-appear, the screen goes black again... and so on.

If I keep pushing the power off button, the watch eventually powers off. But after powering it back on it doesn't actually restart and it goes again into the triangle loop.

The only way to get it unstuck is to follow the procedure for factory reset (hold start, lap and power buttons, the at the first beep release start and at the second beep release lap).

That way I can recover the basic clock functionality and I can access the menus etc. But as soon as I hit the start button I'm back to square one (or rather triangle one...).

  • Same here. Workaround stops boot circle.

  • See notice at the top of this forum and many others.

As well as the support page https://support.garmin.com

  • is there a way to connect to pc when having the infinite boot loop? Without doing a factory reset?

  • Less than 14 days for me so not a good introduction to the world of Garmin watches! But I agree, it's not the watches themselves...it's the software updates and the lack of thorough testing. I can just imagine the chaos in the software dev department. The obvious thing to do is to just reverse the update...but I'm guessing if it were that easy they'd have done it by now.

  • So far factory reset has been the only thing that worked for be. When I connected it to a PC, the watch did not show up, tried it even with Garmin Express.

  • Another one here. It's interesting how recent this issue seems to be. My device was part of the Beta program, so I initially thought the problem was caused by a bug. I performed a factory reset, removed it from the Beta program (this all happened this morning), but after reinstalling the updates, it went straight back into the same loop.

  • Epix pro gen 2, stuck in boot loop now for 2 hours. Tried hard resetting / factory reset but to no avail. Watch won't show up in finder when connected to my Macbook. Hopefully this will be resolved soon.

  • It's incredible, this bootloop thing is not happening on my fr955, which is interesting to note I believe.

This is suggesting that the random behavior in the Garmin world persist.

Anyway it's like I win the lottery Slight smile now I'm going out for training, I hope all will be good.

  • Be careful, launching an activity is what causes the boot loop!
