Does the 965 need to be ejected (from a PC)?

I own a 235, and now a 965.

My 235 appeared as a USB device, and I diligently ejected it after charging/syncing/updating.

But the 965 does not appear in my list of USB devices, even though I am charging it via my PC's USB.

Garmin Connect does see it, so I'm a bit confused.

Does the 965 mount differently?

Thank you in advance,

Eric

  • Forerunner 965 (and 955, since this is posted on the 955 forum) are not mounted on the PC as USB mass storage drives, they use the MTP (Media Transfer  Protocol) to communicate over USB, and don't have to be explicitly "disconnected".

Yeah, this applies to any Garmin device which supports music (which is most modern Garmin watches).

  • Thank you all for replies. Very educational. And would you like to know something funny? I forgot I asked this question here, and went to Google, which found this Garmin page on the subject: https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=JypAwWeVMl7G4R27NuKDo6

So I hope I didn't mess anything up by "removing" my 965.

PS. I have a Windows 11 PC, so that's the tab I opened.

  • For some reason I did not see the 965 forum when I first posted. So I looked again, and sure enough it's there! Thank you again!

  • - that support article (which suggests safely removing your Garmin device before disconnecting it) is actually talking about (mostly older) devices which don't support music. For those devices, which do use USB mass storage, it actually is important to safely remove / eject the device before disconnecting it from your computer

    - for a device which supports music (such as FR955 and FR965), it is definitely not necessary to eject or safely remove your device before disconnecting it from your computer, because they use MTP, and MTP does not require safe removal

    - if you really care, you should still be able to eject your FR965 by pressing the BACK button while your watch is connected via MTP (and it displays the full-screen charging UI). I will stress that this is absolutely not necessary, and should be no different than simply disconnecting the cable (except that you get to keep charging the watch while using the UI on the watch, if you want to)

TL;DR if your device supports music (e.g. Spotify), you don't need to eject / safely remove it when it's connected to a computer.
