Daily suggestion Base runs suggested heart rate is too low

I have my heart rate zones defined as follows:

So my zone 2 goes from 126 to 167. (These zones are accurate, as measured by a lactate threshold test by a sport doctor punching blood.)

But whenever my watch suggests a Base run, it wants me to stay around 144bpm:

This is way too low for me. It used to suggest something around 158 but ever since the last update (I think) it suddenly started suggesting 144bpm, seemingly completely ignoring my custom HR zones. When looking at the stats after the run, my HR zones are shown correctly. But it's very annoying that it suggest such a low HR for me when doing a base run.

  • Quick check.

Under Device -> User Profile you have those Heart Rate & Power Zones.

But there are actually two places where HR Zones are defined.

If you go deeper into that menu you should have Zones - which I believe is your screen shot presenting as there is word Default at the top, but there are also Sport Heart Rate -> Running / Cycling

Do you have the same? I mean Based on BPM and same ranges for each zone?

  • I have no separate HR zones for specifics sports like running or swimming. Never had, because it used to work just fine like that.

  • Understand, but do you have that option?

  • It doesn't say  "Sport HR" for me, but rather "Add Sport HR" since I haven't any specific sport HRs.

  • OK, thanks. One more thing. When I look at my suggested workouts in GC Mobile / Web I can see

when on the watch is says 128 bpm, which is exactly midpoint of my that suggested range, but it is different that my Z2 midpoint.

Do you see HR range shifted from yours 126 - 167 bpm?

  • So, try adding the same default HR zone as a running one.

If it changes the DSW range, you can report it to Garmin, who will be informed of this bug.

  • Without changing anything, lo and behold, this morning I got a Base run suggestion for 153bpm.

    So.. Problem solved I guess.

  • The heart-rate zones are supposed to be very specific to the sportsactivity.  Most people if not all have different heart zone for e.g. running and biking (Biking is often 20-25 beats lower).

As far as I remember the change was made back in Firmware 18.X as many user have reported that the zones where way off.  Now Garmin is merging the Firmwares from all the watches into to a few base-firmware and your experience is a result of that.

  • I only run with my watch, don't do any swimming or bicycling so having only the "general" HR settings is fine for me.

  • What mean it might be bug in your FW, which expects to take ranges from Running "profile" vs Default one.

If that problem will stay I suggest contact Support to clarify
