Forerunner 955 turned off

Hi,  my Forerunner 955 suddenly turned off despite battery was 70% and since then no way to turn it on. I tried several times with light button for 15 sec or more, tried to charge it but still not responding. Any idea what to do?

  • Not a lot you can do I'm afraid. Check for a stuck button (the warm water soak/clean procedure). Make sure your charging cable is OK (try other cable or other watch on your cable).Try the hard reset procedure:

Ensure your watch is powered off.
Press and hold Back (typically the lower right button).
Power on the watch while continuing to hold Back.
Release Back once the "Reset default settings?" message appears on the display.
Select Yes. The reset is successful if the watch powers up and goes through the initial setup steps.
After a successful reset, place the watch outside with a clear view of the sky for at least 20 minutes to acquire satellite data.

Next thing, call Garmin Support. Does anything happen when you put it on the charger, does the display turn on or not? What were you doing with the watch when it shut down, were you in an activity?

  • Hi!

I just came across your post and wanted to say I’m experiencing the exact same issue with my Forerunner 955. It suddenly turned off while the battery was not low — it wasn’t exactly 70%, but somewhere around that level — and now it won’t turn on or charge, no matter what I try (holding the light button, charging with different adapters, etc.).

I noticed there was no follow-up on your message, so I was wondering — were you eventually able to fix it? If yes, I’d really appreciate it if you could share what worked for you.

    Thanks in advance!

  • I am having similar issue as colleagues above. I switched my 955 Solar watch off and immediately tried to switch it back on. The device did not react and does not react to any button press combination. There is no Garmin triangle showing up. When I switched it off, battery was at 60%. Connecting it to power supply does not help. Did you manage to fix it?

  • I connected a watch to the computer and checked if it was detected. lsusb does not show any new device ... Any method to bring it back or is it gone?

  • All,

I am very sorry to read of these issues with your watches. If you haven't already, please see My Garmin Watch or Edge Device Will Not Turn On. If your device is still not powering on, please contact Garmin Product Support directly.

    Thank you!

  • Interesting, I am facing similar issues on my FR955. The screen freezes and I have to power it off and on again. Today at 86% battery. Last time it showed 21% but when I turned it off and on again it just showed the low battery symbol and I had to charge it before I could turn it on again. I‘ve also done the complete reset and set it up as a new watch. Doesn’t help.

Maybe it‘s the planned obsolescence after two years of usage Thinking

  • I have the exact same thing. On several occasions the screen turns black and the watch is completely unresponsive. Sometimes the backlight is still on, this can be switched off by holding the power button. But there is no way to turn the watch back on using the buttons. The only thing working for me is attaching a charging cable, this will make the watch turn on again. It is not caused by a low battery (at least 75% charged). Could be caused by the heat as I was outside in the sun everytime it happened, but it is not crazy hot (around 25 degrees C). Will contact support for more information

  • I sent the watch to the support and they notified me that it can not be repaired, but mine did not switch back on.

  • 2 months over warranty they gave me a replacement for free.. not sure why, my lucky day I guess.  New one has been fine since August of 2024.
