21.19 update process bonkers: maps reset, rebooting several times

So, against my cautious judgment, I decided to go from my stable 19.18 firmware to the latest 21.19, motivated by the desire to try out the meditation and strength training features.

at first, it seems things went smoothly: it updated in 7 minutes and I immediately noticed the nice larger font on the Glances/Widgets. then, per the advice of the release notes, I hooked it up to my computer to use Garmin Express to update everything else like maps and then things went south from there. I

first Garmin Express crashed, and when I went to restart it, It hung, so I disconnected my watch from the computer (Mac) and that seemed to clear things up. my watch then reported it had another update to install (even though I had confirmed it was at 21.19 previously). but I allowed this to install.

then after that, when I went back to the computer and Garmin Express, I tried updating other things (like Maps) multiple times only to have Garmin Express (latest version on Mac) crash repeatedly as it got partially through downloading files. the last time, it seemed to be working well (downloading the maps at 80 MB/s) and I went about working on other things only to have it crash again. when I reconnected everything, it said I was up to date, but then when I went maps, it showed that I only had Asia Maps (I'm in North America) and then Central America for Topo maps.

I'm trying right now to get North American maps back on my watch. (when I pull up the Run activity, I get a blank map). it's 80% through right now as I type this and I'm hoping if I persevere I can get my watch back and working again with maps.

anyone else have this sort of difficulty? I don't recall reading about this sort of bug/problem before.

  • following up: after several reboots and attempts, I got my NA maps back and everything seems to have worked on my 2 runs and 2 strength training exercises I've done since then. battery drain was horrific for the first 20 hours off of the charger, but seems to have stabilized significantly since then. it will take af ew more weeks to see if the drain is appreciably more than FW19.
