Firmware Version Questions

I just received a Forerunner 955 with firmware version 17.28.

I generally disable auto-updating on devices like this until I have a chance to check out the current firmware situation.

I see reports of various issues with newer firmware versions and I'm wondering if the latest version is a net improvement over 17.28 or if there are issues that make it better to hold off on updating.

Also, anyone know if it is possible to download and install a specific firmware version with this device or if there is a single change log that displays changes for each version?

Thanks!

Not to my knowledge, there is someone who keeps a nice log of all the devices and firmware. I will look for it and post it here when (if) I find it.

    Here it is

Also to my knowledge you cannot install a specific chosen FW on a FR series. There may be soem workarounds people use bit there isn't a Garmin approved way to my knowledge.

I am using 20.32 on my 965 and honestly it is fine for my use case , yes there are a few irritating issues but there always are with things these days.

  • Thanks for that link to the log.

It looks like 19.xx and 20.xx don't include any must-have features, but there are a few things in the 18.xx that look nice. I might stay on 17.28 for now, since I haven't noticed any issues. Interestingly, it isn't listed on that log, so I'm wondering if it was only installed on devices at the factory.

If anyone knows if it's possible to download and install a specific release, let us know.

  • There was a "fix" introduced in 18.22 that caused OHR issues for a lot of people. It has not been fixed until now.

"Improved optical heart rate performance in cold weather."

This issue affects many models of the same generation, so there are many threads complaining about it. My advice would be to stick with 17.28.

  • Version 18.xx brought a lot of bugs with maps and navigation that have not been fixed yet.

Yes, guys, the main garmin function is corrupted in current releases.

  • I agree with , and although I have reported, like many other users, some erratic measurements with the OHR, they are very few times out of the total number of activities, at least in my case. I have not detected any of the more than 90% of the problems reported here. I don't know what it is, if it is a different device batches reason and how the software affects them or what. In any case, I have always seen reports of problems of different kinds here, regardless of the software version, even before 17.28 users also complained, you can check it out. For me, in 20.32 it is working well or rather it would be better to say without major problems because there are always things to improve/fix.

  • Yes you can upgrade downgrade if you have the files.

But on most of the products lines, Garmin does not provide it, you should try on the forum to see if ome users are archiving the firmware OS of ther watch when they received each upgrade version.

Allory is only listing all changelog, with official Garmin links (Live and Beta), great site but do not store any firmware.
