music stutters in run activity

Hi,

FR955

Music stutters after 10 or so minutes during a run activity.

I have tried my own mp3s and youtube music download.

I have tested on multiple headphones and wearing watch on other wrist.

Music works when not in an activity.

It's hard not to draw the conclusion that unit is under powered, i.e. can't handle music, gps and HR at same time.

Why aren't loads of people would be complaining about this on a premium watch?

Thanks

  • It doesn't work. I tried to pause it for some seconds to several minutes, but then it starts to stutter again.

The only headset with no problems is one from 2020 with BT 5.0, with more recent headset with BT 5.3 they always stutter

  • I have Galaxy Buds+ which is old model with BT5.0 and there is stuttering.

I dont mind pausing a music for couple of seconds every cca 20 minutes as a workaround.

  • Are you sure you're not having this issue while not in an activity? What you are describing is the same issue as me, except I've been able to recreate it while not in an activity. I've also turned off various settings but haven't found a watch configuration that fixes or directly causes the issue.

What I have seemed to figure out is that the issue only exists when using both earbuds. I have not been able to replicate the issue when using only one earbud or a bluetooth speaker.

The earbuds I am using are Anker Life A1. I contacted Anker directly with my earbud S/N and was told they are Bluetooth 5.0 (some product listings show 5.3 which they said is incorrect).

  • I have the same problem. I basically gave up trying to listen to music or a podcast during an activity.

  • My 965 can't play unstuttering music for more than about 30 seconds, then stutters for a few minutes before I get another 30 seconds on smooth playback. Never had this with my 935. I've noticed the recording of treadmill activity is missing lots of data from the HRM while it stutters too. Tried a few different things, including switching to mono playback during a meditation activity and no other sensors attached, in case it was having trouble with the stereo output or too much data. Most disappointing, can't see me using the new meditation activity with it stuttering like this. I can only assume they haven't put a powerful enough processor in the watch, so it simply can't handle bluetooth music

  • I don't think so, I'm using now my old 2020 headset and it's working fine.

It's something related to newest BT protocol

  • Has anyone had any luck finding out what the issue is / fixing the issue? My watch worked fine with my old cheap headphones. I just got the soundcore V20i which I'm loving for general use, but the stuttering when using them on a run with my 955 is unbearable. Is it a headphone Bluetooth version issue? Has there been any response from Garmin about this issue?

  • if other earbuds don't stutter, you have your answer. I never encounter stuttering with Jabra Elite 8 Active (both first- and second-generation).

  • In the headphone settings (BT 5.3), I disabled the option to connect to multiple sources simultaneously and enabled the priority of signal stability over quality (aptx off). All stuttering completely disappeared.

  • I tried something I saw on reddit, but no luck.

"[In a buried thread on garmin there was information on how to adjust the BLE PHY setting.

Go to settings > connectivity > phone. In this menu press the light button 5 times (top left).

This gets you into the hidden BLE PHY menu. Set this to prefer 2mbps.]"

I'll be returning my soundcore V20i (which I would have loved to keep). And I'll have to use my old cheap headphones that don't stutter with my Garmin 955.
