Can no longer upload courses to my watch - v19.18

I'm not sure when this started but I can no longer upload courses to my watch as I have done many times in the past. I'm using v19.18.

When I create a new course on connect.garmin.com, go to my Garmin Connect app on my iPhone (running latest app and IOS), find the course and send it to my device, I get the "Time to get running. Your course will be available when your Forerunner 955 completes syncing." message. I go to Home on the app and observe the watch (shows connected) syncing and completing. But when I go to the watch, select my activity, go to Navigation and Courses and try to find the course, it's nowhere to be found (used to appear at the top of the list).

Has anyone else encountered this and have any suggestions about how to resolve this? Thanks in advance

    After attaching the watch via cable to my Linux workstation and browsing the list of course files on the watch via Dolphin, I found five that had somewhat unrecognized (to me) names. They each began with a recognizable prefix that I've used to name courses in the past but then didn't recognize the rest. At any rate, I don't remember creating them. They were not on my connect.garmin.com Course list and they were not on my Garmin Connect app Course list and all had been created in the last week or so.That seemed suspicious so saved them to my workstation and then from the watch (after disconnecting it), and on a hunch, manually deleted each of them and restarted the watch.

    I tried another course upload and it worked this time--appearing at the beginning of the list of courses as in the past with new courses. So, without all the Garmin tools to examine things at a lower level, it would seem that something about those files (or the presence of them) was the culprit. I had previously restarted the watch a number of times before this procedure and those hadn't helped. Possibly just mounting/unmounting the watch from my workstation did something but that seems unlikely.
