why does my watch finish me on an odd number of lengths?

Happens if one push off is not noticed or if something happens mid lap that makes it record as an additional lap.

If you look at the individual lap times you amy be able to establish which of the above it is and then make sure to focus on that.

This is a good editor if you want to correct thinks like number fo lengths , splits , strokes etc
