Bike and run activity mode malfunction

I have a new 955 (ver 19.18) that has been working fine for a week. Today I started a bike activity and it continually vibrated and showed a screen with a little clock at the top and a display of 0.00 (like a timer screen, perhaps). All I could do was stop the activity as it was unusable. I could stop the vibration by turning off the system vibrate mode but the display was still the same. The same happened with a run activity though a pool swim open water swim or walk was fine. I've restarted the watch several times and no change. All notifications and alerts that I can find are off and it has worked successfully several days ago. Any help? Thanks.

  • That’s pretty weird. It sounds like you somehow have a time alert set up for every 0 seconds (which should be impossible, but if one was somehow set, it would explain the constant vibration and display of that screen). If it is an alert screen, you should be able to dismiss it by pressing UP or DOWN (although if it truly is a time alert for 0 seconds, then it should instantly reappear.)

If you open your activity settings, are there any alerts set up (*)? If so, disable or remove them.

    (*)

    - Open activity (e.g. Run or Bike)

    - Hold UP for menu

    - Select [Run/Bike] Settings

    - Select Alerts

If that doesn’t help, you could also try resetting your watch to factory defaults. (Since it’s a new watch, this might not be a huge deal, especially since your activity tracking / performance data should come back via Physio TrueUp.)

    - Hold UP for Menu

    - Select System (the easiest way is to press UP, since it’s the bottom item in the list)

    - Select Reset

    - Select Reset Default Settings

  • There is no alerts, alarms, notifications, etc setup. On further reflection it looks more like a distance alert screen than a time alert screen, I even tried setting one up (and then removing it) in the hopes of resetting the alert, it didn't :(

Have attached a screenshot of the watch after starting a bike or run activity.  At this point all I can do is stop the activity, no other buttons or touch functions work.

  • it might be the lap button stuck?

  • Got a similar issue on my 955 Solar, same software version, only with a time rather than distance.

And it's not a zero time at the start of the activity, so I don't think it's marking a lap.

  • I reset the watch. The issue went away for now, but I'm curious as to what's caused it.

  • After having Garmin support analyse all the log files & activities they could find no reason for the problem and simply had me do a factory reset, which resolved the problem at the time. 2 months later, the same thing has happened again Disappointed At any other time I would have been straight onto Garmin support looking for a replacement watch. However, as I have a big race coming up this weekend and don't want to be without my watch, I choose to reset it again, which has fixed the problem for now. I fully expect this to happen again and at that time I will be looking for a replacement as it's not practical to keep doing a factory reset and having to recreate all your watch settings. Not impressed with the 955 reliability so far compared to the 935 that I had for 6 years and only upgraded due to the reducing battery life.

  • The logfiles won't tell you anything about your settings.

I would update to the betaversion 20.23 and see if the problem perisists

  • The logfiles were requested by Garmin support for them to try and diagnose the problem with constant vibration during activities, nothing to do with settings. Unless there's something specific related to this problem addressed in the beta enhancements there's probably nothing to be gained from updating just is case, especially as this wasn't a Garmin support recommendation.

  • IF you have your watch connected to your phone I would try to disable bluetooth to see if that is the issue.

A lot of fixes has been made in FW 20.23 - unfortunately Garmin have not made a detailed list of fixes.

  • I’ve had the same issue. Factory reset and 3 runs in it starts again. Doesn’t happen in trail run activity though (for now). My screen shows a long number (1193:02:47) I thought this was maybe some sort of error code but can’t find anything about it online.
