19.18 - audio prompt issue

Since the 19.18 update I'm getting audio prompts directly from the Garmin Connect app. It happens when I have Bluetooth earphones connected to my phone with Connect open - I only have timer events selected in the audio prompt settings which used to mean (before the update) that I only got timer start / stop / resumed prompts when the earphones were connected to the watch, never with them connected to the phone but now, if Connect is running I'm getting prompts from the phone. Also, the voice coming from the phone is different from the one that's selected in the settings (English male rather than female) where the voice from the watch is correct.

Anyone else noticing this or am I going crazy and this was always normal behaviour?!

  • I almost never run with my phone, but the few times I have, I’ve gotten audio prompts from my earbuds that were connected to my phone (while Connect was open.) This was also the case with older watches that didn’t even support music (which means you couldn’t connect earbuds to the watch itself).

Also, the Garmin support article below clearly states that audio prompts should be available from either the watch itself, or via earbuds connected to your phone with Connect open.

I think this might be expected behavior.

    Audio Prompt Voice Playback

If you have Bluetooth headphones paired to your Garmin device or paired smartphone or tablet, the native voice settings will vary. When the Bluetooth headphones are only paired to the Garmin Device, the audio prompt voice will follow your setting selections from the Garmin Connect app. If you have your Bluetooth headphones paired to your smartphone or tablet, the audio prompt voice may default to your smartphone's text-to-speech settings instead.

  • Hi, nice article, thanks, but it doesn't work as described in it when you use smartphone Audio output (headset or speaker).

I try the Text to Speech setting, the application language setting, etc...

The most funny result was Female audio voice during the first half of the Course Navigatin, then switch to Male Thinking

Garmin explain me that only Male voice is available through smartphone but it's not, etc./

I have done dozens of tests report to Garmin, no reply .... the watch settings always impact the Audio result through smartphone, with a lot random result

  • Hmmm - I was positive this wasn't happening previously but I can definitely see that it's 'normal' behaviour - thanks for the detailed reply. I'm wondering if the timer events prompts have only just been added to the ones that are delivered from the phone - I'll try to check the change log for 19.18 or GC 5.1.

Yeah, I’ve seen bug reports about ppl hearing the wrong voice/language through Connect on their phone. But I think OP’s main concern was whether they should be hearing audio alerts through Connect in the first place.

  • I'm having the same problem.

Even since upgrading the software on my Forerunner 955, I have been unable to turn off audio prompts. In both the Connect app on my iPhone and on the watch itself, the settings say all alert types are off. But my phone (or Bluetooth earbuds) still announce pace info every lap, as well as turn-by-turn directions when navigating a course.

These alerts were all off before upgrading my watch, and they are very annoying to me! I have had to completely silence my phone and disable navigation prompts in order to keep it from doing the unwanted audio prompts. But I do want the silent on-screen turn alerts, and I want to be able to hear other things from my phone while running. I want to get these audio prompts disabled like they were before the OS upgrade.

I have emailed Support about this issue. Hopefully we can find a resolution.

  • I'm having the same issue. My phone now announces things like "battery low" or directions when I'm following a course. I have tried turning everything off that I can find. How do I stop these notifications from coming out of my phone?
