19.18 Touchscreen in Self Evaluation disabled

I'm using my FR 955 with touchscreen disabled during run activities. However after a run, when the 'Self Evaluation' screen appears, the touchscreen was always enabled, which was quite comfortable. However, with 19.18 it is disabled. GARMIN why are you changing things, users got used to without any need. Please change it back.

  • Thanks for the reply, but that's not it for me, as I have touch enabled in each activity and also system-wide. Touch works within the activity (i.e., moving among the data screens), but when you get to the end of the activity and press the stop button, touch automatically gets disabled so that you have to use the buttons to choose among save, delete, resume later, etc. The message is "touch is disabled and can't be used on this page"

If it makes you feel better, this doesn't happen in the latest betas anymore (at least not for FR955)

Personally I think it's a huge step backwards. For as long as Garmin has had touchscreen watches, users have complained about accidentally saving their activity due to an unintended touch (via long sleeve, rain, or some other accidental contact.)

They added the behavior you don't like to Forerunners but not other watches (personally I think it's a feature and it didn't go far enough, as touch was still enabled for the discard confirmation prompt, for example). Now that Garmin is apparently merging the Fenix, Epix and Forerunner software into a single codebase, certain Forerunner quirks are going away. In some cases, that's a good thing. In this case, I think it's a bad thing.

Now I just disable touch for all my outdoor running activities. Previously I was ok with using touch in the run activity that I used for steady state runs (but not workouts or races), bc I knew it would be impossible to accidentally save a run due to touch.

EDIT: Now I see that with the latest beta firmware, touch is enabled for pause menu (if touch is enabled for the activity), but if you use touch to select Save, the watch asks for confirmation. (If you use the button to select Save, there’s no confirmation, as before.)

Seems like a fairly decent compromise.
