Pin Drop Navigation

From the 19.18 change log:

  • Add Pin Drop Navigation - Adds the ability to send and share locations from Apple Maps.

This is kind of awesome. And I don't recall seeing it in the beta software. I just tried it out and it works great. Here's how:

  • From Apple Maps, drop a location pin OR select any POI on the map (building, park, store, etc.)
  • Tap the send/share icon
  • Select Connect from the list of available apps
  • Connect opens with a dialog to "Send Location to Device"
  • After selecting your connected and compatible watch, the watch displays "Location Received" and a list of compatible activities are displayed (Run, Trail Run, Bike, Navigate, etc.)
  • The selected activity is then loaded and the route to the pin is calculated in the background as if selecting from a saved location

This is a nice surprise and probably a welcomed addition for anyone wanting to use the watch for general navigation. Previously, I would use SendPoints to send location information, but this should work just as well, if not easier.

Everything is saved to the watch under Saved Locations, including the POI name if present (otherwise saved as "Dropped Pin"). I suppose this is ok, except if you use it often, you'll accumulate a large list of Saved Locations.
