Route planning FR955 not working

I've just bought my FR955 and after paying the money I kept reading and hearing about map functionality issues with it. I think some that were mentioned were solved, but possibly not all. I seem to be able to upload routes ok, but haven't actually tried to use it on a run yet as I'm injured, so I'm hoping they work ok. There are some other issues I've read about. Not sure if anyone else can point out any that are still there or any that have now been fixed?

The issue I've noticed is that when you want to use any of the route planning features it just doesn't work.

  • If I select run, navigation, points of interest... and then go, I just get 'calculating route' forever.
  • If I use around me, go... Same.
  • If I go through the map activity route, no luck.
  • If I pick navigation as an activity, no luck.

Weirdly enough, it did actually work the very first time I tried! But never worked again and I've turned it off and on again. Not sure what else to do. I've contacted Garmin, so if anyone else has any work arounds or fixes or advice I'd love to hear it.

Thanks.

  • I've just tried your first bullet point on my FR955 (non solar) on Firmware 17.26, and it worked as expected:

Stepped out on the balcony (since route calculation needs GPS). Started Run activity. Waited for GPS to show green indicator. Pressed 'Up' button to reach options (would have worked longpressing it as well). Then did:

Navigation -> Points of Interest -> Recreation; and then scrolled down to the first item (Åparken 399m SW - a park).

Pressed 'Start' button, chose "Go" in that menu and after a few seconds while the screen said "Calculating Route" landed at the main Run screen where a prompt text alternated between "Run" and "Go to Åparken".

Pressing 'Down' button to scroll through the various data pages, the normal navigation pages (that l've defined for the Run activity) were all present, including the map page with the short route drawn.

I did not press the 'Start' button to actually Go, but am sure it would have worked. There have been no problems with regular routes I've created through the Garmin Connect app previously.

Remember that on watch route calculation can take quite some time if complex or long. The CPU is not fast and per rumour has been clocked down even more to save battery.

  • Hi, experience these same issues.

Tried it once, but did not work. Kept it calculating for 1 hour, but still calculating.

  • Unless they've introduced bugs in this area, again, with these later firmwares (18.xx) the only other obvious source of error would be with the installed map(s) on the watch - which need to be routable (whatever that means).

I use only the one that came with the watch: TopoActive Europe 11.5 GB Map Version 2021.21 but when I had the original Fenix 5X (from 2017) I used other - routable - open source maps and they worked excellently.

A new. Europe map version is available, but since I don't use Windows on any computer, I haven't bothered trying to install the Garmin Connect (?) program there (virtual machine). And a bug in both firmware 16.xx and 17.xx prevents map downloads directly on the watch (while plugged in to a USB electricity outlet).

  • Hello and thanks for the extensive reply! I think I was being stupid... I didn't realise the GPS wasn't that strong in my house. I've still not used the route function much as I'm running short distances in known areas due to coming back from an injury, but I tried it very briefly a couple of times and it's fine when I use it outside. I still want to give a proper go for a guided run at some point as a friend said it was glitchy and unusable, but I think all maps and routes bugs have been fixed, so I'm hopeful.
