When navigating during a hike the screen doesn't turn off at all. I feel like this was draining my battery more than it needed to. I have it set to 8 second timeout during activity but it didn't seem to be doing it.
Any help appreciated!

I think it does use more power to keep updating graphics like maps or graphs though. This is more of a concern on all-day hikes than on a typical run etc.
I have an FR255 and even the breadcrumb map seems to drain battery, as well as heart rate charts/graphs.
What I did was configure my activities with several different screens of varying complexity, so I could switch to a more basic one to save power. E.g. just some basic numeric info like clock, elapsed time, distance, ascent/descent, and current elevation. The other screens are there if I want to see more rich detail, but I don't need them showing constantly for a long hike.
