Not getting vo2 max score while running on treadmill

Hi All,

I have recently bought 2 days ago Garmin forerunner 955 watch . I generally run on treadmill for 8-9 km everyday. But i am not seeing Vo2 Max score in my watch. What should be the reason.

  • i can see its set to 182 bpm

  • running on a treadmill does not allow the Garmin watch to determine VO2Max, see the text in the link, you need outdoors activity with GPS signal.

  • It also measures/calculates VO2 max on a treadmill. You can see it in the FIT file, but perhaps it is more accessible if you connect your watch/account to an app like RUNALYZE. There, you can also see trends for the VO2 metrics and more (nerdy stuff).

  • There is a clear criterion for which measurements are considered accurate, the rest are not, moreover, the values from the fit file sometimes simply diverge significantly from the rounded Garmin values.

  • It also measures/calculates VO2 max on a treadmill. You can see it in the FIT file, but perhaps it is more accessible if you connect your watch/account to an app like RUNALYZE.

Your current/average VO2 Max is saved for all running activities, including treadmill activities, but that doesn't mean treadmill activities contribute to your VO2 Max.

Why do I think it's an average? Because you'll see that it doesn't change much from activity to activity, even if you have a great day (race) or a bad day (injury/sickness/fatigue.) The biggest change I've seen in one day is about .21 points.

In contrast, the per-activity VO2 Max that runalyze calculates fluctuates wildly (e.g. by 10 points in some cases).

Why do I think treadmill activities don't contribute to VO2 Max calculations? Bc Garmin said so, and bc if you look in runalyze, which shows Garmin VO2 Max to 2 decimal places in the "VO2 max (file)" column, the VO2 Max recorded for a treadmill activity is always same as one of the previous activities.

Garmin also saves a VO2 Max value to the FIT file for basketball activities, but I'm pretty sure basketball doesn't contribute to my running VO2 Max.

You’ll also see that the “VO2 max (file)” value in runalyze for any given activity will match what’s displayed on the watch on that day (and it will match the granular line graph in Training Status glance > VO2 Max found on newer watches.)
