Interesting how this one works:
- Adds heart rate dynamic source switching to select the best heart rate data source (watch or chest HRM) to improve accuracy during running activities.
Anyone know how it works ?
I think this is the official announcement for a feature / new behavior people have been talking about on the forums for a while now.
Basically the optical HR stays on during an activity even if an external HR strap is connected. People complained about this because they were worried about battery life. Garmin clarified that the optical HR stays on for two reasons:
- to allow Garmin Pay to be used during an activity without asking the user to re-enter thier PIN
- to fill in the gaps if the connection to an external HR strap is lost during an activity
Ofc this is a little controversial bc:
- some ppl care more about battery life
- some ppl don’t like the idea of filling in HR strap dropouts with data from the optical HR
See linked comment for explanation from a garmin employee:
"During an activity, use GPS to navigate to the point where a phone lost connection" - I can't figure it out how this function works. Is it independent data field/screen in specific activities? Did anyone tried?
