Choosing different gear for different activities (e.g., Run vs Trail Run vs Treadmill)

With gear (i.e. shows), you can automatically attach a piece of gear to different activities: Running, Cycling, Hiking, Swimming, Walking, Other.

That's nice, but what I want to do is use different gear based on wheather I choose a Run or Trail Run. I use different shoes for these different activities.

Does anyone know if this is possible? I can't find a way to do it.

  • I don’t think it’s possible although it really should be.

  • As far as I know you cannot set it as a standard for different running categories, but you can change the gear for each activity after completing the activity. In garmin connect on the phone when showing an activity you can go to the three vertical dots at the top right corner of the screen and select add/remove gear and there you can assign the used gear to this activity. Would be nice of  course if that could be set as a standard, but at least you can change it to document the used gear correctly.

  • That functionality is only available if you have the premium subscription Wink

  • What do you mean with premium subscription? Is there maybe a difference in different countries? I have never subscribed (let alone paid) for using garmin connect so far (just bought the watch....).

  • That was a joke.  There is no premium subscription.  The core Garmin business model is that you buy a hardware product and then get free lifetime use of Garmin Connect to access your uploaded data.

  • ok - wasn´t sure (you never now how it is in different countries....)Wink

  • If you search the forum you will find that many people including me have requested more Gear functionality going back to its introduction.  For example the activities it covers is very limited.  It would be nice if it was built out but even in its limited form it is useful however.   My default cycling gear is set for the bike I use most.  I edit the activities afterwards and adjust the gear as appropriate which doesn't take too long.  I suspect Garmin have monitored the usage and found that most people don't need any extra functionality and left it as it is.

Idk about your experience with bike gear, but the process for changing running gear (shoes) is terrible (in the app).

I wrote a whole post about it:

EDIT: wow why was this downvoted?

  • I have posted earlier an idea to select gear right after ending a activity. Just for running I use three different pairs of shoes. I am getting tired of changing the setting every time after the run, when I come home and have to fix it in Connect. So I suggested to make a toggle on the watch after a running activity. Much easier.

  • I also miss this functionality. I have 3 different pair of shoes for running. Different for trail running, different for OCR
