FTP Manual Entry bug with 18.22 update

When my Forerunner 955 received the 18.22 update,   this FTP metric showed up among the data visible when I tap the Performance widget in addition to the VO2 Max, lactate threshold, and race predictions . My understanding is that this is a cycling metric. I've never logged a cycling activity with this device and I've never manually entered any FTP number. Also, FTP is blank in my Android Garmin Connect app. Anybody know why I'm seeing this?

  • All,

I do not know when the update will be released, but I wanted to clarify a few things. The manual FTP value that you see has no impact on your training, fitness tracking, or vo2 max estimation. It is primarily used to estimate power zones for cycling. I understand that seeing this "manual entry" is confusing, especially if you've never even performed a Cycling activity. If that's the case, then the value you see is based on your available biometric data in Connect (a combination of height/weight/age).

After the fix is released, you will still see this manual entry. Unfortunately, the only way to get rid of that screen will be to reset your device's settings (which I know is definitely not preferred). The update will prevent the screen from reappearing on your watch. If you would prefer to not reset your settings, it may be best for you to simply disregard that screen.

I apologize again for the confusion.

  • Your reply is appreciated but for me it raises some questions:

FTP value is estimated based on height/weight/age even for cycling?

How come this was not a problem in past and now requires device reset? What actually changed in the new FW? Sure this is not in the release notes. Software should be able to handle this without requiring device reset if properly planned.

Al this quirks are better described in the manual than a reply on the forum.

Anyone inside Garmin is using this watch and it is satisfied with this?

  • I guess FTP itself is not estimated. It has to be measured with power meter on either bike or trainer.

Then W/kg are just calculated and used to estimate zones.

To be honest, I never look closer to this number, but I was thinking it is related to Running Power

Would it be possible to delete a file off the watch to remove this when the fix is released?

  • The FTP for cycling requires power meter and chest strap. It is estimated during cycling workouts in the sense that one does not have to do specific test to get a new number. The activity must meet a number of conditions for the FTP to get a new estimate.

I do understand that all the numbers from this watch (or any other) should not be taken as gospel but this lack of attention to details is driving me nuts. The user should not be required to ignore some of the watch screens.

  • The Fenix/Epix range of watches have a feature that allows them to save settings and restore after a factory reset. This would seem to be a good time to ask for the same feature to be implemented on the 955? Slight smile

  • Hi, Did you find any way to address this?

Strange thing is I got a new unit (replaced as vibration motor failed) and that had 16.xx on , I upgraded to 19,XX from that and still ended up with the Manual FTP.

  • That is strange. I remember reporting this during the beta phase and receiving an email that it could only be deleted with a full reset. Glad I didn't do that. I can see from Garmin-Sierra's post that he mentions resetting the device's settings. Not quite sure what the difference is
