Forerunner 955 vs 965 in 2024

I read almost all reviews, watched almost all youtube videos, read almost all threads about both watches, but want to hear your thoughts in 2024.

Will be 965 supported by Garmin updates for longer period? (For now they use almost same firmware base, with same features)

Is 955 non-solar worth buying for 200€ less than 965?

Experiences from users that owned both watches?

Thanks on comments.

  • Main difference is the screen. What activities are you planning to use it for? I mainly run but you will note many cycling and rowing activity users prefer the MIP vs Amoled. I can see how it could be annoying as regards screen on/ off gesture if doing those activities.

I prefer the shape of the 965 , its a bit thinner and you don't notice the additional width because of that. The slightly larger screen estate is also nice. I had a 745 and 955 before the 965.

  • In my case, I run and swim.

I don't have a good eyesight, so I need a display that is always readable. With my 955 solar I set the backlight always on during activity, so I don't need to do a not-natural wrist move during runs/swimming to read data

  • SMR is one of the few who has owned both. your question about updates is a good one. it's my (hopeful) suspicion that unlike other generations of Forerunner watches (910 -> 920 - > 935 -> 945 -> 945LTE) that maybe, the 955 and 965 will have similar update longevity because they were released within less than 12 months of each other, and most importantly, beyond the screen, the hardware from what i understand is identical beyond the screen. of course, nothing is assured and the 965 could potentially have a longer upgrade window the than the 955.

that being said, i think i'd look at the feature set available today and worry less about what is to come. for me, a 955 Solar owner, i can't imagine any feature that could come right now that would lure me to upgrade in the near future. both watches are chock full of features.

i think i would consider the following

    - need for AOD vs gesture for the 965. if you don't care about AOD, then the 965 will very likely last you longer between charges. if you use AOD, then the 955 will win.

    - as SMR notes, needing to gesture to brighten the screen might be a concern for some during an activity. i think it would annoy me as a runner, but i could live with it.

    - the larger screen: 1.4" vs 1.3" is a real thing that i would love to have, and i'm expecting my next watch will have to be 1.4" to help my old eyes.

    - do you care about AOD "seconds" showing. for me, i do, but i might be willing (have to) live with 10-15 seconds of it showing that i think is true for the 965.

for me, i'm hoping they will improve the gesture mode/customization of it for activities in the next generation watch, and the AOD will become efficient enough to match my charge interval of my 955 Solar which matches published specs pretty well.

crazy as it sounds, for the same price, i think i would still buy my 955 solar today over the 965, but it would be a close decision because i think i would value the slightly thinner profile and larger screen. but the 955 wins for longer battery life and AOD with continuous seconds. the sexy AMOLED display is nice, but less a factor than the other things.

  • Which Fenix 955/965? The is no such watch.
