Garmin Forerunner 955 Solar - Active calories really low

G'day crew,

Got a really strange issue I'm posting on behalf of my sister (a physical trainer).

Just purchased her a Garmin Forerunner 955 Solar and her active calories with this watch are reporting on average half of what her previous watch did for almost every activity including active calories tracked without recording activities. Her role is highly active and her current active calories seem way lower.

Lower calorie count - 2 month old 955

More normal calorie count - 4 year old Vivoactive 3 Music

- Open to all and any suggestions!

(Watch is updated, has been reset, all individual metrics like height/weight/age correct, no custom heart rate zones, no other custom settings that would affect output that are obvious)

  • Seems like the VA3 didn’t have HR data, so it defaulted to the “dumb” algorithm?

I know you said you checked for accuracy, but do the HR zones and other metrics match between the 2 devices? Only other thing I can think of is placement of the watches — are they being worn in the same way?

  • Good pick up on the HR data although I believe HR tracked activities such as a 10km run reflected half too but I'll follow up on those other remarks for confirmation of programmed zones. I appreciate the time you've taken for the response
