daily suggest work our HR zones not matching my LTHR HR zones

Iv done a guided LTHR test and have my zones and set up according to this, but when I follow a garmin suggested workout that say I must do a base run (to my knowledge this is a zone 2 run) it gives me a HR to follow that is out of my zone 2 according to the rest. see images attached.

can someone please explain what is going on and how I can correct this?

  • My zones are based on lthr but discovered past week that when my watch informed me after run that it correct my max hr the zones are corrected too which is odd cause they are set by lthr... So I switched off auto detection.

  • yes, auto detection gave me headaches too :-). Can it be the case that in fact your LTHR was detected higher, and Garmin calculates a new HRmax?. So your HR max was not actually detected, but calculated by the garmin algoritm? It is quite a mysterious watch sometimes.

  • As far as I’m concerned, the zone percentages that I set should never be changed by Garmin unless I select “reset zones.” Go ahead and change my Max or LTHR if I have auto detect on, but leave my zones as I set them. 

    Maybe Garmin-Sierra can weigh in. 

  • Yes, it was after zone 2 run, so not maxHR there and this was repeating several times last week. Moreover I do have maxHR detected on a race with that watch, with external HR monitor which seems legit but the watch continue to lower it as far I now it should just correct it if it's getting higher...

  • Thanks! This confirms something that I started suspecting, so it is nice to see it explicitly documented. Basically, some of the auto adjustments to my zones were totally bogus but I did not notice some of the changes for a while. So despite the zone settings being "wrong" I was getting the expected training effects. The zone thing was starting to irritate me since I was not sure if it was going to cause all of my performance metrics to be way off, but it sounds like it is not an issue since I was maintaining the proper heart rates and sort of ignoring which zones I was in.

    So basically, zone settings are purely visual aids for guiding DIY workouts based on heart rate. They could be set to totally nonsense values, but if you maintain the proper actual heart rate BPM, then workouts will have the expected effect.
