Training effect wrong?

I just got the FR955.

First activity was on software v.16.x - a "backcountry ski" where i pushed quite hard all the way. It showed this as threshhold / high aerobic. All fine and as expected. https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/13444168147

After updating to software v 17.26, a much easier ski tour has registered as "anaerobic" / "sprint" - which is completely false..  https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/13484633899

Is this firmware related or something else?

am aware that the two different activities were very different, but the second was clearly much easier looking at the charts..

I've since done 3 tours of varying efforts, but all either low or high aerobic range, all registering as anaerobic / sprint.

I'm assuming that this will feed into any future suggested workouts and prescribe me more base stuff and less HIIT stuff, which will be plain wrong..

  • I noticed a similar issue wih running activity and opened a bug for beta 18.xx

  • It's likely that your heart rate zones are wrong (for you).

  • The "time in zones" tab for the "Anaerobic" activity here shows:

    3% in Z3
    18% in Z2
    28% in Z1

And then nothing in the upper zones, so the rest is below Z1 (under 114 for me/the current set up)

This feels pretty accurate to me / how it felt.

  • Training Effect doesn’t care about your zones, just your Max HR.

How you configure your personal heart rate zones does not impact advanced performance metrics such as VO2 max, training status, training load, load focus, or aerobic and anaerobic training effect feedback available on compatible Garmin devices. Overestimating or underestimating your maximum heart rate can, however, affect the reliability of these metrics.[\quote]

  • max is set at 184. Lthr at 173 (I think this is a touch high, more like 169)

    resting is 45-48

There’s no way a ski tour where I didn’t get out of breath should register as anything more than low aerobic.

when my Edge 530 says ‘anaerobic’ I know about it because it was some sort of interval session

  • > As with many Garmin and Firstbeat features, it may take several training sessions for the watch to learn your fitness parameters and produce the most accurate results. While the device is still learning about you, you may see uncharacteristic training effect values.

maybe this is it? wait and see?

though it did get my first z2 ride correct with the 17.26 software.

  • I got exactly the same thing and the reason was that my HR max changed from 201 beats to 180 with the update. After that I was constantly in the red zone and getting a new LTHR every workout until I noticed.

  • Did the same route again today as the very first one. I set the watch off in MTB mode to see what difference it made..

    1. It didn't track my HR well at all. I put in the same effort as the first ~165bpm ski, and it sat at around 120 most of the way.
    2. It did give a "low aerobic" training effect / "base" - which does match the HR graph, but unfortunately this chart does not reflect reality.

How can I downgrade the software to 16.x?

  • I've had this same issue and it hasn't improved over time with my Instinct 2 Solar. My indoor incline treadmill workouts are always spot on with regards to training effect labels, but ski tours are always labeled as Sprint no matter what effort I put in. I've actually disabled HR in the backcountry ski activity as I'm tired of the training effect labels and training load skewing all the rest of my training.

  • It would be nice if there was an ability to specify your training focus. I'm not doing any high aerobic at the moment, purely weight lifting and walks and of course my recorded VO2 max is going down. I'm working on building and maintaining muscle in a body recomp, not endurance... Every day is another Unproductive!
