Track recording currupts... again (16.17)

The watch started to record my runnings incorrect again after the update to 16.17. The watch again writes the distance incorrectly for the first 1-2 km. Again the watch is broken and again it is impossible to run normally. What a nonsense! I was so happy with 15.19. This watch is a disappointment. I have never had so many problems with a Garmin before.

Normal with 15.19 - https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/11819738061

Incorrect with 16.17 - https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/12793016816

If you can't make a normal firmware, then give the option to rollback to a working firmware. Stop joking of users!

  • On the watch:

    Settings (long press UP button)

    Sensors

*Your HRM Pro* (has to be connected at this time)

HRM Pace and Distance --> Check the setting! Should be "only in buildings" (aka indoor running).
If it is "always", the GPS records a track, but the movement information from HRM Pro is used to calculate the distance.

Would easily explain your differences in the track. And also, why it would be different at different paces.

  • Oh dear...

I don't know why for some people it is set "always", yet they never touched this setting. We had that before with other people.
This is really a feature, that causes trouble.

Also in my opinion the HRM Distance feature should just be for indoors. Makes absolutely no sense for outdoors, as it will be almost everytime less precise than GPS.
Maybe only if you have GPS jam, it will help.

  • Very true, but maybe it can be used in areas like mountains.
So how did this happen in my settings? Because I didn't know there was such a setting before.
Only 3 weeks ago I changed the battery of HRM Pro and I wonder if it reset itself and returned to its initial settings.

Although I am not very sure, I am now very hopeful for GPS, hopefully I will come here tonight with a GPS track that has solved the problem.

  • Actually, it is very likely to be caused by this, because in my previous notification, I stated that the GPS worked correctly as I accelerated, but there was a deviation as I slowed down. Since the heart rhythm increases as you accelerate, it may have been based on this because this feature is on.

    I can't wait for tonight :)

  • Nope, I'm useing other device. Wahoo. But many thanks for noticing!

  • GPS recorded it correctly.

    As a summary to be considered in terms of GPS effect;

I have learned that it is caused by HRM-Pro, that HR-Pro should be set as Indoor, and that the relevant setting should be checked when the battery is changed.

Since @UltraKapitan opened the topic, his impression is also important. My problem was solved when I changed the HRM pro setting.

  • And so. The problem is still here after the update (17.24). below two links 1) regular route. 2) part of the regular route where the gps was broken.

Thees two runs were recorded one after the other. You can see check it by start/finish rime. The situation is that the problem occurs only in the first lesson running in the first 1-2km. The next session is recorded fine. This was the case with firmware 12.XX. It is the same now with 17.24.
I will try to install 17.26 and hope that something will change....

By the way, this problem applies only to the running activity. Biking, walking are recorded perfectly!

    Will keep you informed.

pps.: I didn't think I'd say this, but I liked the 17.24 update. Visually there are some nice little things. Some bugs have been fixed. But the GPS... oh... here we are again. and again.

  • still have problems with gps. FW17.26. signs are the same as before.
    Settings:
    all+multiband
    recording - every second
    3d off
Waited about 10 minutes before starting the run, hoping the satellites would lock on. Note: the green ring appears almost immediately.
The problem occurs in the first minutes of the run and then everything becomes perfect.

    Tried this earlier:
    - delete the RemoteSW folder
    - Replace some of my files with other files from a running watch of the same model.
    - Replace with files from the previous firmware.

Can you please tell me where the chest strap distance measurement is turned on/off? Maybe my watch is trying to do it from an unintended strap I'm using?

Actually I dont have any idea what it correlates with.

  • Strange indeed, hope eventually you will find a cause and a solution.

My yesterdays run, I usually only wait 10 sec or so after the GPS lock (green ring), then start running and recording. On my common track it recorded 10,33 km yesterday, 0,01 more than the average result.
Settings: Activity Run, GPS Autoselect/SatIQ, Recording Smart, all 3D off
