Track recording currupts... again (16.17)

The watch started to record my runnings incorrect again after the update to 16.17. The watch again writes the distance incorrectly for the first 1-2 km. Again the watch is broken and again it is impossible to run normally. What a nonsense! I was so happy with 15.19. This watch is a disappointment. I have never had so many problems with a Garmin before.

Normal with 15.19 - https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/11819738061

Incorrect with 16.17 - https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/12793016816

If you can't make a normal firmware, then give the option to rollback to a working firmware. Stop joking of users!

  • yes, other devices work fine.
And why don't my friends have gps problems on the route mentioned in the description? They have other models of Garmin or Suunto or Polar.  And they're fine.

    That's indeed strange.

But the other way around: If the firmware (and only the firmware) would be the problem, shouldn't I then also have problems, using the same device?
I check my tracks and they are fine (beside the usual little inaccuracies for consumers GPS). Tracks never more off than a few meters, distances for my usual trainings are really consistent - until now with every firmware.

So, might it be a hardware related issue?
I know, that is also not completely consistent to the fact, that you have seen no errors with a specific firmware...

But you probably don't know how they work. If the jammer is on, the watch does not even get gps

For GPS/GNNS there are not only jammers (blocking the signal with sending "noise" on the specific frequencies), there is also the possibility to SPOOF the signal (sending a coherent GNNS signal, only that the transmitted information is wrong). Due to the fact that the signal from the satellites is weak, a transmitter on the ground can easily do that and fake the position data for a whole area.

Still, that would not explain, why other devices (of your friends) are not affected.

Any chance you use "3D distance" or -pace?
In the forums there have been some reports, that this does not work good and messes up frequently.

  • I live in Istanbul and I have the same problem. So the issue is not related to location

It seems Istanbul has had some GPS Jamming too, probably due to its proximity to the Black Sea. More around Ankhara, though.

  • I think this GPS jam is unique to 955.
Explain how all other models are not affected by this jamming so that we can believe it.

  • Hi,

All your FW parts are the same as the current release (16.17) and not the RC version. The GPS 5.0 FW is the same that many other devices are using, so it is not related to the GPS FW part specifically.

The best GPS setting are allways EVERY SECOND (PERIOD!!!) )Notice that theree seems to be a bug that reverts the setting to SMART when you do a FW upgrade).

I am located in Europe and for me it certainly matters what my GPS settings are -  If I choose ALL+MULTIBAND then the recordings gets really bad - so my setting is ALL SYSTEMS  - but GPS only is more than enough in 99,9% of all of my training.

Also make sure that you TURN off all of the 3D settings

  • I have never heard that a GPS-jammer is specified to one watch brand or version alone. But it is possible to GPS-jam specifik hardware GPS-chips (some are more sensitive than others, and some have better "FW for handling odd registrations). Garmin has ditched Sony and switched to Airoha (MediaTek) GPS chipsets.

  • Thanks your information. What is gps chipset in 955?  As far as I know that Sony.

  • They are using the MediaTek/Airoha chipset (AG3335M) on all of their units:  Forerunner 255, Forerunner 955, Fenix 7 Sapphire, Epix Sapphire and Tactix 7.

I have not looked up 965 and later released watches but I guess that they are using the exact same chipset.

  • Tomorrow I will run with your gps settings. Than I will share to gps route.  Can you do it tomorrow or other training day with same gps settings.

  • Remember also to turn off the two 3D settings (Distance and Pace)
