PSA: 17.18beta out

FYI... please put discussion in appropriate beta forums.

FWIW, i'm pretty content with the current public release so not sure i'm willing to jump to this until i hear positive reports regarding this beta.

This update, version 17.18, is a Release Candidate. "Release Candidate" means that this exact software version is planned to “Go Live” as a public update as long as no critical issues are observed. All copies of version 17.18 will be identical, so there are no differences in functionality whether you install version 17.18 as a Public Release Candidate or wait for the update to be a Live public update.

To download this update on the Forerunner 955, go to: Main menu > Settings > System > Software Update > Check For Updates

  • So far so good here, installed it yesterday...

Haven't done any running/activities yet and don't see too much difference

    * Indeed a larger font option (system -> display -> use larger font) which works but not needed for me.

    * Naps widget was added but haven't tested/used it yet (do you need to manually set up a schedule or should it automatically detect naps as well?)

    * Red shift? Can't find anything, options seems to be missing.

    * Feels more fluent/faster? But placebo perhaps.

    * Version updates for WHR/BMX (13.0.4->14.0.6), Sensor hub (25.63->27.17 and first beat stuff (6.17.0.0/2.3.0.0 -> 6.17.2.4/2.3.2.4)

  • there's no included sleep coach as featured on other watches with nap tracking.

the UI seems a bit laggy at times for me.

you're unable to choose alternate time zones.

It's not really feature-complete, or of a high enough quality to be release candidate, IMHO

  • the large font thing is intriguing esp with my old eyes. i'm fine with everything as is with the exception of the night/sleeptime watch face where there is _tiny_ font showing the date and next alarm (the main time is a large outlined font)

  • Red shift shouldn't have been included as it only applies to AMOLED devices.  It has been removed from the announcement in the 955 beta programme site.

  • Yeah that one jumped out at me. They are obviously copy-pasting a lot of stuff. (The mistaken post about a 255-only firmware version being available for 955 comes to mind)

  • Tip: it takes a LONG time to reboot in preparation for the upgrade. Be patient.

  • Adds embedded images into smart notifications....
What is meant? I thought that with 16.18 you could see the images of WhatsApp messages....but no. Anyone have any ideas on this?
Another new feature: finally the ABC function has decent graphics and usability (I think like Fenix7).
In short, the Forerunner 955 is ready more than a year after its release, IMHO

  • Whatsapp does not seem to embed the images. I do see the images from the likes of Ring

  • Connected doorbell app
