HR Based Interval Training = Out of range alert spam

HR Based Interval Training is a bad experience and doesn't work properly because of the annoying out of target range alerts.

And this is with Garmin's suggested daily workouts.

Example: a threshold interval (+- 167bpm) followed by a rest interval (+-129bpm). After the transition, obviously the heart will take some time do slow down. But rhe watch will start spamming "OUT OF TARGET HR" alerts right away!

There should be a delay or a predictive algorithm to avoid this.

Ps. The same happens with speed/pace based intervals because of the GPS delay, but the time frame is smaller.

  • HR isn’t a great choice for intervals. It responds much too slowly.

HR works well for longer tempo-type sessions and easy runs - anything that is mostly steady-state for longer periods of time.

Pace or power are better choices for short intervals (or just straight time if you’re on a track where you can compare your splits against your expected times).

  • For long intervals, like 10min, it would be fine to use HR. They only have to make it wait for a some time to adjust the HR before giving alerts like "too high" or "too low".
