FR 955 Solar Charge While Powered Off?

Hi all,

Has anyone tested this? I can't find a line about in the manual, but Garmin Connect Web does describe this "status" under Solar Intensity:

Unmeasurable Intensity

If the solar input of your watch cannot be measured, this will appear as an empty area in your solar intensity chart. This may be due to the watch being powered off or other factors.

Has anyone actually gotten this to work? I know it's mostly a gimmick, I'm just thinking of experience with other sports watches where I went on a long vacation and forgot the charger at home. Would be nice if I could set it on a windowsill while powered off to maximize the charge and extend useful time a bit.

Thanks!

  • i don't know if this works, but you could put it into an ultra lower power mode (set battery saver mode to max savings with minimal watch face, no connectivity or sensors active, etc.), and that would be close to the same as turning it off (uses maybe 1%/day)

  • I had experimented with solar charging to make sure its working. No noticeable increase in battery status (turn on batt indicator in %) when watch is turned on and put under direct sunlight for hours. But once I turned it off and retry the experiment, its about 1% increase per 1 hour under direct sunlight. Since I don't spend much time under the sun and will look for shady paths to jog even if its daylight, the solar charging is as good as useless for me. But I won't say its a gimmick because it really works if one needs it.

  •      With the watch off, I got something between 1and 2%/hr.

But the major pitfall is that when the temperature exceeds 45deg. C the charging shuts down and the watch does not charge. From the sun on the windowsill it warms up pretty quickly.

         This is my experience.

P.S. On the dashboard of the car it works just like that. Overheating...
