Is 16.17 really as bad as it seems? And how to downgrade to 15.19

Hi,

We all know Garmin is bad at the little things like all those problems I'm reading about with 16.17 on this forum. I've turned off auto update and I'm glad I did based on this forum HOWEVER forums are known to concentrate all the people who are reporting problems and those who aren't having problems just don't post. So my question is, is 16.17 one of those updates that creates random problems on some users watches? Or are the problems that people are experiencing universal?

Second question, if I do upgrade and am not happy with the results, is it easy to downgrade back to 15.19 WITHOUT losing all of my current watch settings?

Thanks!

  • nope. i've done IM Emilia Romagna Italy saturday, 16.17 recorded everything fine, tracked a very good swim + swim HR from a HR Tri strap (the blue one), it even started a livetrack session when in T2 my phone was few meters away into a bag... and asked if i want to stop an unconnected livetrack session during run, when phone went away.
IMHO is an usable and stable release.

  • I've no other major issues than with the versions before. But my watch crashed and rebooted yesterday after deleting about 20 tracks. You never stop hitting bugs...

  • I agree with you about that. Also I don't know if it's lucky or what, almost all reported problems are not replicated on my devices (talking about Release version of the fw). This not mean that the problem not exist, but can happen in one or ten into the thousands of users. I moved from other brand to Garmin and until now the fw has better stability, with further update and features additions each year (Thanks Garmin Development Team!) and a better integration between the devices. I couldn't get this from any of the other brands that I used in the past and by this reason I actively move all my devices to Garmin when I'm updating them. I hope that Garmin continues in this way.

forums are known to concentrate all the people who are reporting problems

Having bugs it's a common thing on software, no matter how hard you work, always you can find something to fix or improve.
With the latest FW I don't have mayor problems and I really love my FR955. Now with the v16.17, everything it's OK, at least that I use it until now: cyclicling (MTB, gravel, etc), Running, Walking, Tacx, Tracking with GPS, Daily advices, Sleep tracking, etc.

If you upgrade, can't go back to previous version AFAIK. Likewise I can't think of anything that makes me feel that I was better with version 14.x or 15.x, in all aspects I prefer the current v16.17.

  • Only issue I'm having is the calandar widget browsing which restarted the phone.

I'm shocked but the maps/navigation work fine in this update. Typically there's a bunch of issues but I noticed beta testers did report back mapping issues and they fixed them. Even if the 955 never gets another update I'm happy with it now.

  • yes, exactly... after a year the navigation with the maps finally works well. yes, as you say, several "minor problems" remain, but overall it works well now.

  • No issues here on 16.17, except indoor pool swimming calculating I swam 25km. Mostly do running, stairs, indoor cardio.

  • Well, I decided to go ahead and do the update. I got the endless restart bug immediately. My watch finished updating but wouldn't let me back in. As soon as it got to a notification regarding Spotify it would restart. I called customer service. They didn't know how to fix it either and it doesn't seem to be Spotify specific. So I ended up having to factory reset my watch. Darn!

I did make a backup of everything but the backup isn't restoring all of my previous settings. The customer service rep mentioned that there are some differences between the two firmware's that doesn't allow a clean restore. Plus, I'm always going to lose things like my connect IQ apps and garmin wallet.

I've got to say, it's common for us as consumers to update our electronic devices. With no other company have I had more troubles than with Garmin. It seems they rely on their customer to troubleshoot bugs through the Beta program but lack of participation and, more importantly, tenacious reporting of those bugs, leads to an inferior product - or at least a product that takes many, many update cycles to get to where it needs to be.

Anyway, now off to see if I have any of the other bugs reported. Crossing fingers.

  • Bad karma and bad attitude.

No issues with my 955 with 16.17. Running, cycling, indoor trainer, swimming... all good.

  • No issues here, though large font size is annoying. I use watch for daily wear and running.

  • You haven't a clue what you're saying.  I'm a multiple half distance triathlete and the problems are significant.

    Swims no longer track distance.

Wrist heart rate doesn't work at all.  Chest strap does work.

Delayed starts and crashing when starting activities.

    Frozen screen after charging.

Check for updates says updates are ready to install...and already operating on the most current version of 16.17.

Check for updates via WiFi says that the power is too low to connect to wifi...watch is at 100%.

That's just a few of the issues I'm experiencing.  I definitely know how to use this watch and the five I've had from Garmin previously.
