Forerunner 955 keeps trying to update

Hi all!

I’ve had my 955 for about exactly a year. A week ago it went through an update. Then another. Then another. I finally realized something wasn’t right. Now about once or twice a day it will try to update and always tries every time I take it off my wrist. I have plugged into my computer and the program says the watch is up to date. I have done a factory reset on the watch, everything I can think of. Still keeps happening. This is on software 16.17.

Any ideas?

  • All,

If you have access to a computer, please plug the device in using the charging cable and follow the steps below:

    PC:

    1. Click Window's start button
    2. Click (My) Computer (This PC on Windows 8 or 10)
    3. Double-click Garmin device drive
    4. Double-click Garmin folder
    5. Delete the Remote SW folder and any files named GUPDATE

    Mac:

    1. Navigate to Desktop
    2. Double-click Garmin device drive
    3. Click Garmin folder
    4. Drag the Remote SW folder and any files named GUPDATE to the trash
    5. Click on Trash
    6. Click Finder
    7. Click Empty Trash
    8. Confirm you wish to permanently delete these items

After the files are removed, open Garmin Express and sync. If you do not already have Garmin Express installed, please follow the steps from How Do I Install Garmin Express Software?. If Express says there is an update is available, go through with it.

After the sync is complete, unplug the device. It may ask you to update once more. Select to update the device, and let me know if it continues prompting an update from that point on.

  • Done! Initial minutes after seem to indicate it worked. Thanks

  • And what about Windows 11? I even searched the entire PC for any files named GUPDATE with the watch connected. Nothing shows up. In Garmin Express it says the watch is up to date. This is becoming quite annoying because it tries to update itself several times a day; even with Auto Update turned off.

  • Also, upon further time passing, this did not fix the issue

  • Same here. Deleted RemoteSW folder, no GUPDATE files... and... immediately displayed the update now message on the screen. This happens every time I unplug the watch from the cable, whether charging or using Garmin Connect and often when I remove the watch from my wrist.

Any more ideas? I, too, am on v16.17

  • I’m having this issue as well. And when it goes through the update it stops recording steps and heart rate. This is extremely frustrating and garmin needs to fix this ASAP

  • I am experiencing the same problem; fr 955 constant 1min updates, and no heart rate sensor or temp sensor. When I try to use 'check for updates' in system, it says 'not connected to wifi' (it is connected) and 'would you like to connect?' I click yes and it says 'battery too low' (battery is full).
